Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Spring Lambs, Prime Hoggs, Cast Sheep & Sheep with Lambs at Foot. Monday 9th May 2022

Spring Lambs
The weekly sale of spring lambs saw a overall market average of 303p/kg for the 169 lambs forward which mainly consisted of first cross lambs topped the sale today saw RC Billington & Son, Claughton on Brock sell Texel to £150 with others from the same good home at £141 and £140. Top price per kilo goes to regular Lancaster supporter S Wilson & Son, Scotforth with lambs at 350p/kg. David and Karen Swarbrick’s consignment out of Texels topped at £142 with others at £137.

Prime Hoggs
Another good entry of 600 hoggs saw the best bred and good meated hoggs similar on the week, with plainer sorts at realisation. T Taylor, Woodplumpton sold quality Texel hoggs at £153 with W&J Livesey, Inskip not far behind at £149. Dalesbred sold to £117 from FK&F Woodhouse, Scorton who also had Mules at £128. A good run of well fleshed Swaledales from DC&E Miller, Claughton on Brock achieved at top of £107. Cheviot hoggs saw SH&LE Birkett sold heavy weights to £135 and £132.50 for a pen of 18.

Cast Sheep
Cast ewes and tups the week saw a few more on the market with prices a shade easier following the festival last week. A top price today saw Texel ewes to £144 from JE Parkinson & Son, Quernmore with other Texels at £140 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth who also had Mules at £142 and £136. Swaledale ewes from M&L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale achieved £93, Dalesbreds sold to £92 from FK&F Woodhouse, Scorton. Just a handful of cast tups on the market which saw Suffolks to £120 from Pilling Hall, Pilling and Cheviots to £108 from SE&J Gorst, Littledale. All cast sheep today averaged £109.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot
The annual show and sale of hoggs with lambs saw a smaller number than recent years. Our thanks goes to our judge John Hill for his time and expertise. Getting the champion rosette today was DJ Clarke Farming, Barnacre for his pen of Mule hoggs with Texel lambs which went on to sell for £220 per family. DJ Clarke Farming was also awarded the second and third prize rosette. The Continental first place rosette was awarded to PM&AM Ward & Son, Arkholme which went on to sell for £180. All hoggs with lambs averaged £198 per family.
Older ewes with lambs from S Ashcroft, Chorley sold Mule ewes with twin Texel lambs to £180 with others from C Barker, Hest Bank achieving £175 and ewes with single lambs to £155 from the same home.
