Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Weekly Sale of Spring Lambs, Prime Hoggs, Cast Sheep and Sheep with Lambs at Foot. 2nd May 2022

Spring Lambs

The weekly sale of spring lambs at Lancaster on Bank Holiday Monday saw a few more forward with a lot more required and expected at next weeks sale as more companies are now expressing interest in spring lambs. The consignment from A & E Clarkson, Thurnham lead the way today selling to £155 and £150 with Texel lambs. Other Texels sold to £147 from GA & A Atkinson, Cantsfield followed by £142 from G & D Ball & Son, Great Eccleston. There was an overall market average of 310p/kg.

Prime Hoggs

The number of prime hoggs continue to come forward with an entry of just shy of 600 forward still in plenty of demand. The consignment from Joshua France, Pilling leads the way selling to a peak of £155, £153 and £148 three times all with Texel and Charolais cross hoggs. The consignment from DA Wilcock, North Ashton sold to a top of £148 with Texel hoggs. Other leading prices saw Barker Farms, Cockerham sell to £146 followed by other Texel hoggs to 3146 from JW & SE Drinkwater, Quernmore. Many more pens of well finished hogg sold around the £140 mark. More hill bred hoggs in the market today saw Gritstones sell to £135 from Cardwell Farms, Stalmine and Cheviots from J & H Davis to £133.

Cast Sheep

The trade not just as dear as previous weeks but still very strong with the bank holiday and the end of Ramadan taking an effect this morning. It was continental cross rams that lead the way selling to £168 from C Ellison, Pilling. The ewe trade sold to a top of £162 from Bargh Contractors, Heaton for a Texel. Plenty of strong continental ewes still selling in excess of the one-hundred-and-forty-pound mark. Big mule ewes peaked at £133 from T & L Kirkham, Eccleston. Horned ewes saw lonks peak at £116 from A Brown, Littledale with Swaledale sheep selling to £100 from AC & K Pye, Abbeystead.

Breeding Sheep

It was great to have a larger entry of sheep with lambs at foot forward with something to suit all buyers requirements and budgets. It was sheep with good quality single lambs that lit the ring up today. Beltex ewes with single beltex lambs from Darren Atkinson in Quernmore sold to £220 with other outfits and singles lambs to £205 from D & J Hay, Cockerham and C Barker, Lancaster. Continental ewes with good texel twin lambs sold to £250 from C Barker, Lancaster.
