J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Weekly sale of Sheep with Lambs at Foot, Spring Lambs, Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep. Tuesday 3rd May 2022

Sheep with Lambs at Foot
There was an increased entry of just under 300 sheep with lambs at foot or 777 lives, with sheep to suit all buyers specifications and requirements. Mule gimmer shearlings with twin Texel lambs led the way selling to £300 from G&KM Atkinson, Colby. This was followed by other Mule shearlings with twins from EM Winspear to £250, who also sold Mule shearlings with singles to £228. Young Texel sheep with twin lambs sold to £280 from MC&AE Staley, Kirkby Stephen with Texel shearlings to £270 from G&SM Stephenson, Ravenstonedale. Big aged Continental ewes with strong Texel twin lambs sold to £275 from I&P Brown, Ravestonedale. Young Mule ewes with twin lambs sold to £260 from G&KM Atkinson, Colby. Texel ewes with single lambs peaked at £255 from RL&R Atkinson, Holme. This was followed by other Texel ewes with single lambs to £250 from MC&AE Staley, Kirkby Stephen. Zwartble ewes with single lambs sold to £240 from RJ&P Metcalfe, Crook. More hill bred sheep are coming on the market now with Cheviot ewes with Beltex twin lambs selling to £210 from Messrs Buckle, Kirkby Stephen, who sold Welsh Mountain ewes with twin lambs at foot to £140 with the singles selling to £98. Next week sheep with lambs at foot will take place on Tuesday, with the great annual show and sale of hoggs with lambs at foot on the Thursday.

Spring Lambs
The largest number of spring lambs of the season with 110 forward were met with the most demand seen so far as many companies now look to spring lambs as the quality of hoggs decreases. The overall market averaged was 320p/kg with the SQQ of 338p/kg and handy weighted lambs in the most demand selling to an impressive marked averaged of 365p/kg. Smart Beltex lambs from FE&CM Robinson & Son, Crooklands led the way selling to a top of £172 or 400p/kg this was followed by the consignment of Beltex and Texel x lambs from RW&S Nicholason, Lupton selling 40kg Texel lambs to 390p/kg or £156 with 39kg lambs also achieving 390p/kg or £152. A run of Suffolk lambs from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe sold to £161 and £157. This was followed by Texel x lambs to £156 from JN&DJ Bowes, Crook. Other leading prices saw AE Atkinson & Son, Endmoor sell to £151, followed by WN&D Smith & Sons, Cockerham to £150. All spring lambs forward averaged £147.76.

Prime Hoggs
A very mixed offering of hoggs were forward today which saw leaner types sell to realisation. Hoggs with flesh on were in good demand with heavy weights selling to £142 from RJ&KR Wilkinson, Levens. Better quality hoggs sold around the 300p/kg mark peaking at 310p/kg from Messrs Harrison, Shap.

Cast Sheep
Less numbers about today but all ewes still selling to a nice trade with more needed to fulfil buyers demand. Suffolk ewes led the way selling to £153 from RW&SA Nicholson, Lupton with other Suffolk ewes to £148 and Texel ewes also from the same good home to £169. Mule ewes would be slightly less on the week with the best getting into the £120’s topping at £127 from D&A Nicholson, Ulverston with medium fit Mule ewes regularly selling at the £105-£115 mark. Hill ewes saw some good returns once again with Cheviots selling to £131 from NP&CE Buckley, Stavley other Cheviots to £128 from RW&SA Nicholson, Lupton with Rough Fells selling to £118 from EJ Hodgson & Son, Lambrigg. The best Swaledales sold regularly over the £100 mark topping at £103 from JD Dixon, Flookburgher. Medium fit Swaledale ewes were regularly selling at the £85-£90 mark.
All cast rams continue to see great demand with Leicesters topping at £126 from P Whitton & Son, Burneside with Beltex tups selling to £188 from AE Atkinson & Son, Endmoor.
