Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancasters Weekly Sale of Calves, Stirks, Store & OTM Cattle. Friday 29th April 2022

The weekly sale of calves at Lancaster had an entry of 61 forward selling to an increased demand, with fresh faces ring side ensuring a stronger trade than in previous weeks with these buyers in attendance again next week. Topping the calf trade today was a consignment from J&G Thornley, Kirkham selling British Blue bull calves to £450 and £445 with heifers to £420 and £405. This was closely followed by a consignment from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping selling to £430 for British Blue bulls and £400 for British Blue heifers Limousin bull claves peaked at £370 from A&L Gardner, Quernmore with plenty of good quality calves selling in the mid £300’s. Native bull calves sold to £340 for Aberdeen Angus’s from AW&AM Park & Son, Ellel followed by others to £335 from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping. Dairy calves saw Fleckviehs sell to £205 and £195 from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green with Montbeliardes from the same home to £180 and £170. Friesian bull calves peaked at £160 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale followed by others to £145 from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping. All Friesian bull claves forward averaged £104.
A record breaking monthly stirk sale at Lancaster saw the continued success of the revised sale go from strength to strength. A new record price of £1420 was achieved for a 11 month old shapely suckler bred bull from John Bargh, Heaton with Oxcliffe. Suckler bred bulls were in big demand at Lancaster today with a consignment of pure bred Limousins at 10 month old from W Salisbury, Kirkham selling a pair to £1255 and a pen of three to £1220. 12 month old Charolais bullocks saw another record broken for the highest price steer in the stirk ring, selling to £1240 from R&J Parkinson, Preesall. Native cattle peaked at £1000 for a yearling Hereford bullock from B&BA Rimmer, Scorton. The heifer trade peaked at £810 for 10 month old Aberdeen Angus heifers from G&D Ball & Son, Little Eccleston with other Aberdeen Angus heifers to £795 from JW Thwaites, Tebay. Dairy bullocks saw 8 month old Montbeliardes sell to £660 from D Wilkinson, Preesall with Friesian bullocks at 9 months old to £650 from DJ Townley, Lancaster. A pen of 10 yearling Friesian bullocks from D Atkinson, Quernmore sold to £610. The next stirks sale with be the mid May stirk sale on Friday 13th May.

Store Cattle
A larger entry of 312 store cattle were forward today at Lancaster, which saw the trade continue to be as strong. The consignment from CF Hogarth & Son, Burneside lead the way selling a Limousin bullock to £1700. This was followed by other Limousin bullocks at £1680 from L Parsons & Sons, Levens. The next call for Limousin bullocks was £1660 from DJ Townley, Lancaster. Native cattle saw Hereford sell to £1600 from JW Atkinson, Bentham with British Blue bullocks peaking at £1560 from K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel. Plenty of strong bullocks sold in the late £1400.
Short keep heifers were in big demand today twice peaking at £1580. Firstly for a Limousin from JM Capstick, Ashton with Stodday and then for a British Blue from DJ Townley, Lancaster. Aberdeen Angus heifers sold to £1550 and £1490 from L Parsons & Sons, Levens. Dairy bullocks peaked at £1460 for a Dairy Shorthorn from J & O Galbraith, Endmoor. Black and White bullocks sold to £1420 from KH Knowles, Inskip. All steers forward today averaged £1204 and heifers £1114.

OTM / Cast Cattle
A few less cows about because of the bank holiday weekend but this did not affect the trade with an overall market average of 185p/kg or £1154. OTM heifers led the way selling to 249p/kg from EJ Ward & Son, Nether Kellet for a Simmental. OTM heifers peaked at £1706 for a beef Shorthorn from R&EA Gardner, Briggsteer. Black and White OTM heifers peaked at 219p/kg or £1701 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. OTM British Blue steers sold to 239.5p/kg or £1508 from N Bretherton, Leyland who also sold Friesian cast steers to £1628 and Limousins to £1626. Other noted prices for Friesian steers were £1612 from I Atkinson & Son, Warton. Beef cows sold to a top of 237.5p/kg or £1714 for a 12 year old Limousin cow from Allen G Riley, Nether Kellet this was followed by Limousin cows selling to 237.5p/kg or £1688 from TA Chapman & Son, Kendal.
Best meated dairy cows regularly sold between 200-210p/kg. Dairy cows peaked at £1587 from WT Eastham & Sons, Goosnargh with other leading prices being £1560 from J Huddleston, Brookhouse, £1559 from I Atkinson & Son, Warton, £1544 from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green and £1550 from PW&JM Norris & Son, Hornby.
