Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Calves, OTM and Store Cattle - Friday 7th January 2022

CALVES & WEANLINGS
The opening 2022 sale of calves and weanlings had an offering of 91 which saw quality in big demand and eagerly bid for, with smaller and plainer calves showing a slight uplift. Weanling British Blues lead the way with bulls selling to £490 and £475 from GM&ME Woodhouse & Son, Ellel and heifers from the same home selling to £460. A run of Charolais bull calves from TM Townley, Over Wyresdale sold to £475 and £450. This was closely followed by British Blues from JP&C Robson, Garstang selling to £445 with Aberdeen Angus’s from the same home selling to £405. Plenty more pens of good quality calves regularly sold in the mid £300’s. Dairy bull calves sold to a top of £365 and £305 for Fleckviehs from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green. Weanling Black & White bulls sold to £295 from RE&P Miller, Barnacre and £280 from Messrs Jones, Cockerham.

STORE CATTLE
Cattle from James Kellet, Pilling Hall always attracts a keen interest in the Lancaster store ring, this week topping the opening sale of 2022 with a consignment of home bred Aberdeen Angus bullocks realising £1660. This was closely followed by Limousin bullocks selling to £1570 from H Chapman & Son, Middleton who enjoyed a strong trade for their consignment of Limousin and British Blue bullocks selling to £1440 three times. The next call was £1340 for Charolais bullocks from Cowell & Moore, Woodplumpton. Charolais always create plenty of demand with others to £1400 from MJ Waller, Lupton and £1380 from WJ&L Barker, Arkholme. Simmental bullocks sold to £1420 from AG Stafford, Out Rawcliffe. Lancaster always has a good name for native cattle with a pen of Aberdeen Angus bullocks selling to £1360 from PM&ST Entwistle, Abbeystead. Plenty more bullocks regularly selling in excess of the £1300 mark. The heifer trade peaked at £1380 for a pen of three British Blues from M Shepherd & Son, Pilling. This was followed by Aberdeen Angus heifers twice selling to £1300 firstly from JB Moore, Grange Over Sands and also from Pilling Hall, Pilling. Dairy bullocks peaked at £1260 for Montbeliardes from AG Stafford, Out Rawcliffe with British Friesians selling to £1200 from EE Thornton & Son, Heaton.
Following the successful opening sale of the year buyers are requesting more store cattle over the coming weeks, to replenish empty sheds following a busy Christmas period.

OTM CATTLE
A great start to 2022 in the cast ring at Lancaster with 106 cattle forward selling to an overall market average of 135p/kg with all specifications a sharp trade, including fresh buyers ring side joining the already busy ring of loyal buyers. Leading the way today at 201.5p/kg was a Limousin cow from Mason & Gardner, Ingleton grossing at £1350. This was followed by British Blue cows to 194.5p/kg from AR&BJ Thompson, Selside which grossed at £1410. Plenty of beef cows today regularly sold around the 180p/kg mark. OTM Black and White heifers peaked at 194.5p/kg twice, firstly from JK&B Birkett & Son, Morecambe followed by others to the same price from J Bargh & Son, Heaton with Oxcliffe selling to £1091. Plenty of dairy cows today sold between 140-150p/kg selling to a top of £1471 from EW&CR Clegg & Sons, Stalmine.
