J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Fortnightly Sale of Calves, Stirks, Store and OTM Cattle - 6th January 2022

CALVES & WAENLINGS
The opening calf and stirk sale of 2022 had an entry of 161 forward, the calf trade saw good quality calves in big demand with plenty of buyers on the market looking to purchase them good types. Younger and plainer types of calves sold to a selective trade leading the way in the calves was British Blue bulls selling to £420 from A Pickthall, New Hutton. Followed by £415 from EW&RM Towers, Hornby, £410 from JW&TE Sharp, Lyth and £400 from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick. British Blue heifers sold to £375 from EW&RM Towers, Hornby with plenty of good types of beef calves easily selling in the early to mid £300’s. Dairy bull calves sold to a top of £295, £270 and £250 from EW&RM Towers, Hornby with a consignment of Fleckviehs.
British Blue heifers led the way in the stirk ring, selling to £705 from PW&PJ Mason, Burton in Kendal. A nice pen of Aberdeen Angus 5 month old bullocks sold to £500 from Messrs Young, Lindal.

STORE CATTLE
The new year show & sale of 410 store cattle saw a wonderful yard full of cattle, which were presented to a high standard from all vendors. A full ring side of buyers all looking to purchase replacement stock which led to a strong trade throughout the sale. Todays sale included the annual show of store cattle, with the champion animal being awarded Janet Gorst Perpetual Challenge trophy. Thanks goes to our show sponsors TA Broderick & son and Daleshead Veterinary Group Ltd. The Champion animal was awarded to the first prize Limousin bullock from M&L Preece, Kirby Lonsdale with the reserve champion being awarded to MA&JA Winn, Burneside. North West Auctions would like to thank the Gorst Family for presenting the trophy. The reserve champion, a British Blue heifer from MA&JA Winn led the sale, selling to £1620. The annual consignment of Limousin bulling heifers from M&L Preece, Kirby Lonsdale created much interest from local and travelled buyers, selling to a top of £1590 with others from the same home selling to £1450. Strong British Blue heifers from N Cooper & Sons, Broughton sold to £1560. The heifer trade can only be described as outstanding with many well bred strong heifers regularly selling well above the £1400 mark.
The bullock trade was topped at £1450 from N Cooper & Sons, Broughton closely followed at £1440 from SJ&AL Hargreaves, Morecambe. Limousin bullocks sold to £1380 from the impressive consignment from Messrs Hodgson, Rydal. Other Limousin bullocks sold to £1370 from MA&JA Winn, Burneside. Native bred bullocks continue to be a strong trade at J36 with Aberdeen Angus to £1230 from J Twigge, Lindale with Galloways from the same home selling to £1205. Yearling continental bullocks sold to a fast trade with many buyers round the ring looking to purchase these types. The best regularly sold around the £1100 mark and the next level down £950-£1000.
A few bulls on offer today, the run from J&T Hunter, Dent led the way selling to £950.

OTM CATTLE
The opening sale of cull cows saw eight buyers ring side keen to secure all classes and types. Heavy well fleshed beef cows sold to a top price of 171.5p/kg for a Limousin x from R&BJ Cleasby, Broughton in Furness with Stabilisers from A Dixon & Son, Selside selling to 167.5p/kg. Keen interest in beef bred cows suitable for further finishing saw Aberdeen Angus x sell to 159.5p/kg from M Allen, Carnforth with this price also achieved by R Keith, Brigsteer selling Blonde x. Dairy cows sold to a top price of 134.5p/kg for a Norwegian Red x from JJ&MA Park & Son, Heslington with 124.5p/kg achieved for a Holstein Friesian from B&MJ Nelson & Son, Heaversham, with Montbeliardes selling to 119.5p/kg from RJ Nicholson, Lupton. All cull cows today averaged 126p/kg.
OTM heifers saw a top price of 177.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from R Morris-Eyton & Son, Whicham, with a British Blue x achieving 164.5p/kg from JR Robinson & Son, Nook. British Blue x steers sold to 207.5p/kg from JW Robinson & Son, Farlton. Cull bulls sold to 137.5p/kg for a Simmental from JE Stables & Son, Cartmel.
