Prime Hoggs
The weekly sale of prime hoggs at Lancaster Auction Market had an entry of 500 forward, selling to an overall market average of 262p/kg with an SQQ of 265p/kg which included large entries of upland bred and heavy weight hoggs. Handy weighted hoggs continued to be in the strongest demand with well shaped Continentals regularly selling in the region of 300p/kg. Beltexs peaked at 361p/kg from RM Gornall, Forton. 52kg Beltex hoggs sold to £150 from AG Butler, Hambleton with Texels to £147 from AT Alcock, Inskip, £142.50 from J&MM Cliffe, Forton and £140 twice from W&J Livesey, Inskip, with the consignment from Bargh Contractors, Heaton with Oxcliffe peaking at £140. Plenty more pens of hoggs easily sold in the one thirties. Upland hoggs saw Mules sell to £128.50 from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale with other Mules to £121 for 48kg from A Brown, Littledale with Mashams peaking at £120.50 from DC Miller, Claughton on Brock. Horned hoggs peaked at £114 for 41kg Lonks from S Bosworth, Burnley, with 44kg Horned hoggs to £110 from A Chard, Roeburndale. Well finished lightweight hoggs continued to be in big demand.
Cast Sheep
The cast sheep ring peaked at £168 for Texel rams from Bargh Contractors, Heaton with Oxcliffe, the consignment from G&D Ball & Son, Little Eccleston saw Texel ewes to £146 and Suffolks to £138. Other leading prices saw Texel cross ewes to £140 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe with others to £130 from S Bosworth, Burnley. Plenty more sold in the one twenties, although buyers were cautious of over fat ewes. Masham ewes sold to £120 from G&D Ball & Son, with Mules to £114 from T&L Kirkham, Eccleston. Horned ewes peaked at £112 for Lonks from S Bosworth, Burnley with other pens of Lonks regularly selling around the £90 mark. Swaledale and Dalesbred ewes sold to £76 from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale with others to £76 from T Longton & Son, Quernmore and JW Cornall & Sons, Bleasdale.
