Lancaster Auction Mart held its annual Hill Fair Day sale of all classes of breeding sheep and rams, followed by store lambs. The sale commenced with the breeding sheep with Mule gimmer shearlings twice topping at £160 from M&YS Barker, Halton with one crop ewes topping at £135 from the same home. The next section of the sale was the gimmer lamb section which was judged by William Gardner, Brookhouse who we thank for his time. William awarded the first prize rosette to Andrew and Lisa Huddleston, Wray which went on to sell for £120. Also achieving £120 twice was WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale, followed by £118 from T Ayrton & Sons, Over Wyresdale and T&H Drinkall, Calderside. The entry of gimmer lambs today consisted mainly of running lambs, that saw all Mule gimmer lambs average £102. Texel gimmer lambs twice peaked at £120 from RT&ME Sutton, Stainton.
The trade today for tups saw powerful good confirmation tups in strong demand. The consignment of Texel tups from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping met a strong demand, selling to £780, £700, £600 and £500. This was closely followed by the consignment from Hazel Carter, topping at £450 with a Texel shearling tup.
An entry of long keep store lambs saw Texels peak at £81 from J Whewell, Scorton, with an overall market average of £74.
