Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Spring Lambs, Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep, Monday 24th May 2021


Lancaster had an increased entry of 543 spring lambs forward selling to an overall market average of 323p/kg which were met with plenty of demand to include another new buyer ring side. There was a premium paid today for well finished, heavy weight lambs with 45-51kg lambs averaging an impressive 166.59p.

The consignment from Wannop Farms led the way selling 53kg Texel lambs to £180, this was followed by the consignment from JS Horner, Ingleton selling 51kg Suffolks to £176, 47kg Suffolks to £175 and 45kg Texels to £168. 49kg Texels sold to £173 from P&V Bennett, Aldcliffe. £170 was achieved twice, firstly for 48kg Texel lambs from RA Holmes, Inskip and then for 47kg Texel lambs from P Lawrenson & Son, Chorley who sold further pens to £162. Other noted prices for Texel lambs were £167 from Yasmin Lewtas-Wood and £164 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth. Suffolk lambs peaked at £161 weighing 50kg from G & D Ball & Son, Little Eccleston. Plenty of pens of well finished lambs were selling between £140-£160. This week’s top p/kg was 379p for Texel lambs that grossed at £144 from RC Billington & Son, Claughton-on-Brock. More spring lambs are required each week to fulfil the requirements of our busy ring of buyers.


There was more demand this week for prime hoggs, as a few companies do still require them. The consignment from T & E Burrow, Slyne led the way selling 51kg Texel hoggs to £149 and 47kg hoggs to £137. Hoggs from Andrew Butler twice sold to £140 with his consignment topping at 326p/kg for 43kg Texels. Horned hoggs peaked at £114 from L Jenkinson, Poulton-le-Fylde. Today prime hoggs averaged 257p/kg.


A larger entry in the region of 100 cast sheep were forward today which met more demand ring side and a sharper trade. Continental cast tups sold to a top of £146 from JM Kelsall & Son, Quernmore. Texel cross ewes sold to £130 and £120 from Wannop Farms, with other Texel ewes twice achieving £120 from P Lawenson & Son, Chorley. Suffolk cross ewes sold to a top of £120 from B & J Preston, Caton with others achieving £116 from KA Purtill, Wigan. There were plenty of Continental ewes selling around the £110 mark.

Cheviot ewes sold to £106 from R Doran with others to £104 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth. Mule ewes topped at £100 numerous times, firstly from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth then C & B Lowther, Over Wyresdale and Wannop Farms, Heaton-With-Oxcliffe. Plenty of pens of strong Mule ewes sold in the late £90s. All cast ewes continue to be required.
