Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Store Cattle, Friday 21st May 2021

CALVES AND WEANLINGS

A cracking day in the calf ring today at Lancaster saw an entry of 130 forward, met by the usual crowd of buyers plus some new customers who were very impressed with the quality and quantity on offer.

Charolais bull calves led the way topping at £500 for a bull calf at 1 month and 8 days old from Wannop Farms, Heaton-with-Oxcliffe. Other Charolais bull calves sold to £495 for a 6-week-old from Drinkall Brothers, Over Wyresdale. British Blue bull calves twice peaked at £480, firstly from AJ & AJ Gibbons, St Michaels-on-Wyre, with EA & E Lund & Son, Nether Kellet also achieving £480. This was closely followed by £470 from AD & R Milner, Claughton-on-Brock, £465 from G & M E Woodhouse & Sons, Ellel and £455 from T & G Parkinson, Out Rawcliffe. British Blue heifers sold to £465 from J & G Thornley, Kirkham, followed by £450 from CR & A Baxter & Son, Middleton and £445 from G & M E Woodhouse & Son, Ellel. All British Blue bulls forward averaged £367.50, with British Blue heifers averaging £353.16.

Native calves saw Angus bulls sell to £445 and £425 from J & G Thornley, Kirkham, followed by £405 and £400 from Wannop Farms. Angus heifer calves sold to £360 from J & G Thornley, Kirkham. Friesian bull calves met plenty of demand in Lancaster, peaking at £205 from Lawsons Farm, Cockerham. With Drinkall Brothers twice achieving £200 and others to £195 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale. All the 22 Friesian bull calves forward averaged £146.50.

STORE CATTLE

Lancaster once again had an offering in the region of 200 store cattle, selling to a slightly easier trade following many outlets reporting a drop of 20p/kg deadweight. Leading the way was a pen of three Angus bullocks selling to £1550 from L Parsons & Sons, Levens. Angus bullocks from R & DM Rossall & Sons, Pilling sold to £1460 with British Blues from the same home achieving £1370. The consignment from J Prest & Son saw Angus bullocks sell to £1400 with British Blue and Limousin bullocks from the same home selling to £1380 and also sold Herefords to £1360. A pen of four Angus bullocks from J Hesketh, Hutton sold to £1350, followed by a pen of three to £1340 from J & M Maudsley & Son, Endmoor.

This week the heifer trade peaked at £1340 for a pair of Angus from L Parson & Sons, Levens. A pen of three Beef Shorthorn sold to £1260 from R & E A Gardner, Brigsteer. Limousin heifers sold to £1240 from WA Hodgson, Whinfell with British Blues to £1200 from J & M Walmsley, Pilling. Dairy bullocks topped at £1110 for Montbeliarde from JA & SM Allen, Windermere, with Black and Whites selling to 1050 from J & JM Walmsley, Pilling.

OTM CATTLE

Lancaster had a reduced entry of 75 cast cows entered today, with an overall market average of 148 p/kg. Limousin OTM heifers sold to 201.5pkg and 197.5p/kg from J M Kelsall & Son, Quernmore. Pure Limousin cast cows sold to 197.5 p/kg or 1441 from RH & C Ayrton, Abbeystead. Limousin cows from B & SE Cater, Ellel sold to 187.5 p/kg and 184.5 /kg. Other beef cows saw Simmentals sell to £1366 and £1348 from Barlow Bros, Croston.

Black and Whites saw cast steers sell to 194.5 p/kg or £1293 from I Atkinson & Son, Warton. Black and White OTM heifers sold to 187.5 p/kg from WN & D Smith & Sons, Cockerham. The best dairy cows today sold between 160 – 170p/kg, peaking at £1204 from Bradley Farms, Poulton le Fylde, with others to £1184 from
GR Park & Sons, Whinfell and £1179 from J & G Thornley, Kirkham.
