Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Sheep with Lambs at Foot, Spring Lambs,Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep, Monday 19th April 2021

Spring Lambs

Lancaster Auction Mark had an increased entry of 52 spring lambs forward with the quality on offer very commercial and a shortage of best lambs for our butcher buyers. Heavy weight Suffolks led the way selling to £154 from G & K Richmond, Inglewhite. This was followed by the consignment from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth selling to £143. Other leading prices were £140 for Suffolk lambs from G & D Ball & Son. The consignment from WN & D Smith and Sons, Cockerham sold to £140 and £139. Spring lambs sold to an overall market average of 318p/kg.

Prime Hoggs

Lancaster is desperately in need of more prime hoggs, with an impressive overall market average of 294p/kg with handy weighted hoggs averaging 312p/kg. Continental hoggs topped at £164 from Andrew Butler, Hambleton, with others from the same home twice achieving £154 and others to £149 and £148.
A cracking consignment of Beltex hoggs from JE Parkinson & Son, Quernmore sold to £158, £155, £152 and £150. Beltex hoggs sold to £155 and £150 from GM & A Jackson, Little Eccleston. The top p/kg this week for Beltex hoggs was £360 from JE Parkinson & Son. A cracking run of Cheviot hoggs from PJ & P Mason, Out Rawcliffe sold 44kg hoggs to £144, with 42kg hoggs from the same home selling to £137.50 and £135.50. Horned hoggs peaked at £124.50 from CA Fletcher Goosnargh.

Cast Sheep

The Cast sheep trade remains very strong with vendors urged to cash in their waifs and strays. Cast tups led the way today with Suffolks selling to £173 from G & K Richmond, Inglewhite with Blue Faced Leicesters to £168 from RH & C Ayrton, Abbeystead. A run of Texel and Beltex ewes from CM & CA Jackson, Caton sold to £164 and £150. Beltex ewes from Bargh Contractors sold to £153. Suffolk cross ewes sold to £148 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth, with plenty more Continental and Suffolk cross ewes selling either side of the £140 mark. Mule ewes sold to £123 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth followed by others to £120 from PD Anderton, Scorton. Horned sheep saw Swaledale cast tups to £106 from RH & C Ayrton, Abbeystead.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot

Following on from the bumper entry last week, Lancaster had a smaller entry forward this week meeting plenty of trade. Leading the way was Continental cross ewes with twin lambs selling to £248 from A & S Miles, Ulverston. Aged Mule ewes with twins sold to £200 from RM Gornall, Forton. Already booked in for next week sale are 60 families with more required as Spring finally approaches.
