Dairy Cattle Sell to £2900 at NWA Lancaster

North West Auction held its popular monthly sale of dairy cattle at NWA Lancaster which saw an increased entry of cattle from both new and returning customers attracting a competitive ringside of buyers with several new faces in attendance from the northern counties and throughout the Midlands. All types and classes of dairy cattle were presented at today’s sale which featured the first part the dispersal on behalf of Messrs E & SM Halpin, Barrow in Furness.

The pre-sale show was kindly judged be Mr Peter Dakin, Bolton by Bowland, who had 15 cattle presented before him in the 2 show classes. NWA would like to extend our thanks to today’s sponsors Paxton’s and the Lancashire Holstein club for their continued support. The Championship rosette was awarded to the first prize heifer ‘Wyredale Lineman Bruster 64’, being 10 days calved and giving 29ltrs from MJ & H Atkinson, Quernmore. The Reserve Championship rosette was won by Tomlinson Bilsrow Ltd, Bilsborrow showing ‘Bilsrow Cayman Snowboots 4’ bred from 5 generations of VG EX and giving a daily yield of 37 litres. 12 heifers were presented in the heifer class, which all exhibitors must be congratulated on the quality of cattle in this class. The cow class was won by JE & J Pye, Quernmore selling ‘Quernmore Doreen 259’ being fresh into her 2nd lactation and yielding 38 litres with the second prize rosette won by AV Lord & Co, Ulverston selling ‘Goadsbarrow Charm 2’ fresh into her 3rd lactation.

The sale topped at £2900 for ‘Bilsrow Cayman Snowboots’ bred from 5 gens VG/EX cows and a dam with a LP of 50,000 which was successfully purchased by a returning Lancashire Buyer. This heifer was closely followed by ‘Bilsrow Jareb Marie 3’, supported by 6 generations of VG/EX and giving 30ltrs, sold for a final bid of £2700 finding a new home in south Cheshire. A trio of heifers from the Carwood herd of B & V Swan, Chorley sold to £2420 for ‘Carwood Embassey Amethyst 43’ selling to local purchaser Wallbank Farms Ltd, Lancaster. EH & R Eccles sold the top of their consignment at £2400 for ‘Denhamhill Marley Hazel’ closely followed by the first prize cow ‘Quernmore Doreen 259’ achieving £2350 from JE & J Pye, Quernmore. MJ & H Atkinson sold the first of their pair being the champion ‘Wyredale Lineman Busyter’ at £2300. Messrs Drinkall Bros sold the best of their trio ‘Pennine Poppy 1489’ at final bid of £2200.

A feature of today’s sale was the first part dispersal of the milking porting and in-calf cows and bulling heifers on behalf of E & SM Halpin, Barrow in Furness due to a change in farming policy. In milk cows sold to £1360 for a 4th lactation cow with others generally £980-£1220. In calf cows due to a Pedigree Holstein Friesian Bull sold to £1400 with others achieving £1380, £1360, £1300 to include a jersey cow at £1000. The sale concluded with bulling heifers which sold to £920 with others at £880.
