Store Cattle

Pinch, Punch, first cattle sale of the month saw stores topping at £1300.

There was a decent trade, once again, at Lancaster which saw big cattle to a strong trade considering the current circumstances, with it being the correct type of year for gazing type cattle and these being in strong demand. The sale topped at £1300 from JA & LR Wilson, Millom with Limousin bullocks. Other Limousin bullocks sold to £1260 from PM & ST Entwistle, Abbeystead. British Blue bullocks peaked at £1260 from L & A Duckett, Higher Bartle with others selling to £1230 from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Angus bullocks peaked at £1200 from L Parson & Sons, Levens with Shorthorns selling to £1190 and £1180 from J Prest & Son, Bayhorse.

Heifer trade peaked at £1160 for Limousins from R & J Dodgson, Natland. This was followed by British Blues to £1110 from L & A Duckett. Angus heifers peaked at £1090 from T Robson & Son, Poulton le Fylde with Charolais to the same price from R & C Parkinson, Hambleton.

Dairy bullocks topped at £1110 from AG Stafford, Out Rawcliffe with black whites selling to £1070 from JA & LR Wilson with other black and whites to £1040 from W & A Cardwell, Stalmine.

Younger grazing type cattle still sold in good demand.

Cast Cows

There was a good show of OTM Cattle this week, that saw trade a copper or two less, but still a very strong trade with Lancaster Auction Mart still the place to market your stock. Cast Limousin steers sold to 184.5p/kg for Limousins from PM & ST Entwistle, Abbeystead followed by Fleckvieh heifers from D Hargreaves & Son, Kirkham selling to 179.5p/kg and 174.5p/kg. Limousin OTM heifers also achieved 174.5p/kg from WS Burrow & Sons, Silverdale. Beef cows twice topped at 154.5p/kg for Limousin and Charolais from F & IM Potter, Grayrigg with better beef cows regularly selling around the 150p/kg. Best dairy cows sold in the late one thirties.

Top price per head today was £1112 from L Burrow & Sons, Lower Tatham followed by cows from Wannops Farms, Heaton with Oxcliffe selling to £1061 and OTM black and white heifers also achieving £1061 from J Bargh & Son, Heaton with Oxcliffe. Over 10% of the cattle forward sold in excess of £1000.

There was an overall market average of 124.5p/kg.

Calves & Stirks

Another good day in the calf ring today saw all types of calves in plenty of demand. There was an entry of 60 forward, it was the consignment from J & G Thornley, Kirkham that topped the market with Angus bull calves selling £400 and £380 and British Blue heifers to £360. The consignment of British Blue calves from Wannop Farms, Heaton with Oxcliffe saw British Blues twice sell to £375, £370 and £355, twice. Hereford bull calves, sold to a top of £370 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with British Blues from the same home selling to £355. The consignment of Hereford bull calves from TE & M Kidd, Ellel sold to £280 and £270 five times with Hereford heifers to £200.

Black and white calves sold to £140 from D & K Howarth, Hambleton with nice young rearing calves £40 to £65.
