Lancaster Livestock Auction: Store Cattle - Friday 26th June

Store Cattle

The weekly sale of Store Cattle had 230 forward with the quality on offer very varied, with a large proportion of black and whites on the market. For the first time in a long time store cattle sold to £1400 for a pen of 3 Limousin bullocks from R Collinge & Son, Kirkham. This was closely followed by British Blue bullocks selling to £1360 from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe with others selling to £1300 from GR & A Foy, Conder Green. Native cattle always create plenty of demand at Lancaster with Angus bullocks selling to £1340 from GE Turner, Inglewhite followed by others selling to £1320 from LA Bradshaw, Stalmine who sold Hereford bullocks to £1280. Plenty of heavy weight strong bullocks sold in the twelve hundreds.

Black and white bullocks peaked at £1240 from D & K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe with the heifer trade peaking at £1210 for Charolais from EW & A Bradshaw, Stalmine. This was closely followed by Angus heifers selling to £1180 from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton. Plenty of pens of well-fleshed heifers sold in the eleven hundreds.

Cast Cows

There was a flying OTM trade with a very impressive overall average of 143p/kg. Leading the way this week at 214.5p/kg or £1329 was Limousin heifers from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton. This was closely followed by other Limousin heifers selling to 199.5p/kg or £1236 from RH & RA Fawcett, Burton who sold two Limousin steers to 194.5p/kg. Also achieving the 194.5p/kg mark was a Simmental steer from E Rossall, Preesall which grossed £1293. Angus’ sold to 194.5p/kg from Ballacutchel Farms, Isle of Man.

Beef cast cows sold to 171.5p/kg for Limousins from JG & PH Thompson, Selside who sold others to 169.5p/kg, these grossed at £1154 and £1110. This was closely followed by Stabilisers to 169.5p/kg and 164.5p/kg from JA & R Geldard & Sons, Levens selling or £1061 and £1050.

Dairy cows sold to a top of 164.5p/kg from AD & R Milner, Claughton on Brock with plenty of dairy cows selling in excess of 150p/kg. Dairy cows sold to a top of £1160 from JH Towers & Son, Tunstall with others selling to £1135 from JM & A Wallbank & Sons, Wray with others selling to £1106 from L Burrow & Sons, Lower Tatham with many more dairy cows grossing in excess of the £1000 mark.

Calves & Stirks

The weekly sale of calves had an entry of 52 forward that saw the strong calves continue to be as an equally a good a trade with young beef calves slightly easier, black and whites continue to be good trade. Leading the way this week was February/March born British Blue weanling steers selling to £505 and £495 from P & ME Higginson, Pilling who sold heifers to £440 and £420. The consignment from J & G Thornley, Kirkham saw Angus bull calves sell to £420 with British Blue heifers selling to £410 from the same home. WR Clarke & Partners, Yealand Redmayne sold British Blue heifers to £385. Plenty of good quality calves sold in excess of the £300 mark with plenty of young beef calves selling in the mid to late two hundreds. Dairy bull calves saw black and whites sell to £205 and £200 twice from WG Farms, Cockerham with plenty of rearing calves selling in excess of the £100 mark. All black and white bull calves averaged £141.

Lancaster’s end of June stirk sale had an entry of over 100 forward. As per usual, good quality and well-grown stirks always meet plenty of demand. Leading the way this week was 10-month-old Charolais bullocks from DC Miller, Selling to £805 with Charolais heifers from the same home selling for £750. 9-month-old British Blue bullocks sold to a top of £760 from JE Harrison, Greenhalgh who sold British Blue heifers to £700. Yearling Montbelairde bullocks sold to a top of £750 from WG Farms, Cockerham. 6-7-month-old British Blue bullocks sold to £735 from FW Rhodes & Son, Ellel with British Blue bulls to £700 and Angus bulls to £695 from the same home. Limousins sold to £690 for bullocks from WJ & EA Woodhouse, Nateby with bulls to £670 from WJ & L Barker, Arkholme. Black and white sold to a top of £585 from J Howard & Son, Catterall.
