Spring Lambs

Lancaster Auction held its weekly sale of Spring Lambs with 816 forward selling to an overall market average of 208p/kg. It was the consignment from P Rossall, Claughton on Brock that lead the way this week selling 43kg Beltex lambs to 256p/kg or £110. This was closely followed by Beltex selling to 250p/kg or £105 from JE Harrison, Forton with 245p/kg twice achieved by TM Townley, Over Wyresdale and A & E Clarkson, Thurnham. There was plenty more pens selling in the 230p/kg range. Heavy weight Texels sold to £110 from M & L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale. Other notable prices for Texels were £105 from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth and £103 from A & E Clarkson. Suffolk lambs this week peaked at £102 and £99 from J & R Waller, Killington with other Suffolk lambs selling to £100 from WN & D Smith & Son, Cockerham. Well-meated light weight lambs continue to meet plenty of trade often selling between 210p/kg and 220p/kg.

Prime Hoggs

There was a smaller number of Prime Hoggs forward as the season comes to an end. Topping the market today was Texel hoggs from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth selling to £90 and £88.

Cast Sheep

There was more cast ewes on the market today that saw lean ewes in strongest demand with over fat ewes harder to place. Texel ewes topped the market at £123 from WN & D Smith & Sons, Cockerham. Continental ewes sold to a top of £107 from J & H Huddleston, Brook House with others from the same home selling to £97. Suffolk ewes sold to a top of £98 from G & D Ball & Son, Little Eccleston. Mule ewes sold to a top of £81 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth with other pens of Mule ewes, that weren’t over fat, selling the mid-seventies. Horned ewes this week saw Swaledales top at £59 from D & D Huddleston, Wray.
