Prime Hoggs
North West Auctions weekly sale of Prime Hoggs continues to have a competitive trade. There was 561 forward selling to an overall average of 226p/kg, with 45-50kg hoggs averaging 231p/kg. As to be expected at this time of year there was a large quantity of hill hoggs forward. Once again, there was strong demand at Lancaster for best quality hoggs with Beltex hoggs from Bargh Contractors, selling to 307p/kg or £129. Beltex hoggs from the consignment from AG Butler, Hambleton selling to 300p/kg or £126 with Texels from the same home selling to 298p/kg or £125. Texel hoggs from Kelsall & Wood, Scotforth sold to 300p/kg or £120 with other Texels from the same home selling to 283p/kg or £119. Texels from J Bargh & Son, Heaton with Oxcliffe sold to 286p/kg or £120 with other pens of Texels selling to 279p/kg or £131.
Top price per head today was £136 for 55kg Texel hoggs from J Smith, Daisy Bank. This was followed by 50kg Beltex hoggs to £134 from Bargh Contractors. There were numerous more pens of good quality conformation hoggs selling in excess of £125. Suffolk hoggs twice sold to a top of £120 from G Riley, Bolton le Sands. Mule hoggs peaked at £110, weighing 49kg, from PD Anderton, Scorton followed by 47kg Mules selling to £107 from A & J Rhodes, Ellel.
Horned hoggs topped at £81 from WJ & EA Woodhouse, Nateby.

Cast Sheep
There was an increased entry of 98 cast ewes that saw a continued strong trade for the mixed quality on offer. Topping the trade was CA & J Alty Ltd, Warton selling Continental ewes to £115 this was followed by Texels to £109 from BR & S Carter, Pilling. Mule ewes topped at £106 from BN Pye, Abbeystead with others to £105 from CA & J Alty. Plenty of Mule and Continental ewes selling into the nineties and early one hundreds. Hill bred ewes saw Cheviots sell to a top of £90 from A & J Smith, Ingleton with Dalesbreds topping at £81 from FK & F Woodhouse, Scorton with others from the same home selling to £75. Swaledale ewes sold to a top of £76 from DM Eames, Abbeystead.
An entry of goats forward today saw them peak at £96 from D & N Davis, Nateby with others to £82 and £80. More goats are required each week to satisfy our buyers.
