Prime Pigs
North West Auctions held its dedicated sale for Prime Pigs on Tuesday 25th February which had a nice entry of pigs forward selling to a sharp trade, with 7 active buyers and several leaving unable to fulfil orders.
The sale topped at 131p/kg for Pietrain x Saddleback gilts and hoggs from PK & R Woof, Stainton who sold others at 126p/kg. Pietrain x gilts from J Stott Jnr, Crosscrake sold to 119p/kg. Lighter weight pigs sold to 110p/kg for Large White x gilts from M Bennett, Penrith with Saddleback boars selling to 100p/kg from HMP Wymott, Kirkham and others at 98p/kg.
Top-grossing was a run of hoggs and gilts from PK & R Woof, Stainton selling at £128 with J Stott Jnr, Crosscrake achieving £125. Lighter weight pigs sold to £86 for Saddleback boars from HMP Wymott, Kirkham and Large White gilts to £75 from M Bennett, Penrith.
All Prime pigs today averaged 105p/kg with well finished hoggs and gilts in keenest demand with coloured pigs and boars a more selective trade.

Prime Hoggs
There was a sharper trade for Prime Hoggs today at J36 with an overall market average of 230p/kg with handy weight hoggs averaging 234.5p/kg. More hoggs are required to fulfil our buyer’s requirements with J36 having another strong trade. Topping the market today at £143 and £130 was Texels from HR & KA Hodgson, Barbon. Beltex hoggs peaked at £141 from LM & C Whitaker, Kirkby-in-Furness. Suffolk hoggs peaked at £130 from EW & JR Parkinson, Dunsop Bridge, with Leicesters selling to £129 from AJ & CM Harrison, Kentmere. Plenty more pens of hoggs sold in the late teens and one twenties. Mule hoggs sold to a top of £110.50 from R & EA Gardner, Brigsteer, £110 from JD Dixon, Grange-over-Sands and £109.50 twice, form WI & A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale and EW & JR Parkinson. Horned hoggs peaked at £109 for Rough Fells from AEA Harrison, Kentmere. Other horned hoggs sold to £107 from EJ Burrow, Milnthorpe. Swaledale hoggs topped at £100 from Messrs Hodgson, Rydal.
Best conformation Beltex hoggs sold to 287p/kg and 286p/kg from LM & C Whitaker with others selling to 287p/kg from Messrs Hodgson, Rydal. Good conformation hoggs were regularly 200p/kg+.

Cast Ewes
There was a good entry of over 400 forward ewes, once again, selling to a slightly sharper trade for the mixed entry of sheep in. Leading the way this week was Suffolk ewes from R Wilson, Appleby selling to £157 and £148 with Texel ewes from the same home to £134. Other Texel ewes sold to £136 from WJ & L Barker, Arkholme followed by Leicester ewes to £133 from RI Dixon, Low Newton. Texel ewes sold to £131 from AE Atkinson & Son, Endmoor and £129 from J & O Galbraith & Son, Endmoor. Teeswaters sold to £131 from C Head, Kendal with Cheviot Mules to £128 from RW Nicholson, Lupton. Plenty of Continental ewes sold in the one twenties and thirties. Mule ewes sold to a peak of £117 from J & O Galbraith with others selling to £109 twice from A Cottam, Crossthwaite and WJ & L Barker. Best Mule ewes sold in the early one hundreds. Hill and horned sheep saw Rough Fells sell to £100 from W & F Lawler, Tebay. Gritstones sold to £99 from SJ Middleton, Dent with Cheviot ewes peaking at £95 from JW & E Woof & Son, Sedbergh. Best hill ewes sold around the £90 mark.
Cast tups sold to a top of £136 for Leicesters from JS & S Atkinson, Scorton. This was followed by Texel tups to £128 from JS & KM Wilson, Helsington with Cheviots to £127 from J Potter, Tebay and Rough Fells to £126 from AJ & CM Harrison, Kentmere.
A couple of goats today peaked at £76 from JD Dixon, Grange-over-Sands.
