Spring Lambs

The weekly sale of Prime Lambs had an increased entry back to 885 forward. There was a very mixed entry of lambs forward this week which saw a lesser market average of 207p/kg selling to a full complement of buyers. Leading the way this week was 54kg Charollais lambs from V & EJ Chadwick & Son, Sowerby. Beltex lambs sold to a top of £114 from TM Townley, Over Wyresdale, purchased by Gregory Williams Butchers, Lancaster. Suffolk lambs sold to a top of £114 from P & ME Higginson, Pilling. Texel lambs sold to £112 from Wannop Farms Ltd, Heaton with Oxcliffe with other Texel lambs to £110 and £108 from AT Alcock, Inskip. Plenty more pens of good conformation and heavy weight lambs sold in excess of the £100 mark. This week’s top pence per kilo was 255p/kg from Wannop Farms Ltd with plenty of pens of good conformation lambs selling in excess of the 240p/kg.

This week saw a larger quantity of hill lambs forward with Cheviots selling to £97.50 from A & J Smith, Ingleton. Mule lambs peaked at £91 from T & H Drinkall, Oakenclough with plenty of pens in specification Mule lambs selling around 200p/kg mark. Horned lambs today peaked at £80.

Cast Sheep

What a trade for cast ewes! There was an increased entry of cast ewes forward this week selling to a very dear trade. Leading the way this week was DR Preston, Caton selling to £116 for Texel Ewes closely followed by £115 for Texels from V & EJ Chadwick & Sons, Sowerby. All Texel ewes averaged £98.80. Continental ewes sold to £109 from A Leak, Poulton le Fylde with other pens from the same home to £105. Continental rams sold to £107 from Messrs Jones, Cockerham. Plenty of pens of Continental ewes sold in excess of the £100 mark. Cheviot Mule ewes topped at £101 from the Exors of DM Cardwell, Stalmine. Mule ewes this week peaked at £96 from A Leak who sold others to £92 with a large quantity of strong Mule ewes selling in the late eighties. All Mule ewes forward this week averaged £74.50.

Upland ewes saw Cheviots sell to £83 and £82 from R Doran, Winmarleigh with horned ewes peaking at £48 for Scottish Blackfaces from the late WM Pye, Ashton with Stodday. Herdwick ewes sold to £60 from A Leak.
