J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: Pedigree Texel Rams & Females - Sunday 9th August

The Sale Goes On with Largest Entry to Date

North West Auctions were honoured, once again, to host the annual show and sale of pedigree Texel Rams and Females on behalf of the North West Texel Breeders Club. This sale continues to grow in reputation each year, with the 2020 sale being a record entry of 269.

The pre-sale show, which we thank vendors for understanding the restrictions that were put in place, was capably judged by Mr James McKerrow of the Nochnary Flock. He awarded his Championship Rosette to lot 163 a much-admired Stainton Gimmer Shearling from PK & R Woof, Stainton. She was sired by the renowned Auldhouseburn Bolt out of a Knock Yankee Ewe. She later went on to sell for 1400gns purchased by T Ryan-Davies, Conwy. The Reserve Championship was awarded to lot 95 ‘Lisas Texels Dandy’ a ram lamb from Lisa Timmis, Appleby. Dandy, sired by a Knock Yankee ram and out of one of the best breeding lines of Lisa’s Texels with the Dam sired by Stainton AKA 49, went on to sell for 750gns purchased by A Carr, Low Bentham.

The sale commenced with the rams with aged rams selling to a top of 900gns from Nick Hulse, Stafford selling Aspley Bravo, a ram that was sired by the 17,000gns Greenstar Alfie. There was the strongest trade seen for shearling rams with plenty of commercial men present giving between 500gns and 800gns. Leading the way was ‘Procters Co Pilot’, sired by the 12,000gns Fordaforie Balvenie, selling for 1500gns to the Falshaw of Bury. The ram lambs saw a joint top price of 1500gns achieved. Firstly, for a much-admired 36,000gns Usk Vale Cheeky Charlie Son, ‘Nochnary Dancer’ from DJ McKerrow, Cornhill on Tweed. This ram lamb ranked in the top 5% EBV and was purchased by Miss PT Anderton, Bamber Bridge. The second ram lamb to reach 1500gns was ‘Far Hey Drogba’ from RS & J Bradley & Son, Barnoldswick. This ram was sired by Sportsmans Cantona and out of Teiglum Younggun who was second prize shearling ewe at Great Yorkshire Show 2019. This ram lamb was purchased by AF Harker, Long Preston. Also selling in excess of the 1000gns mark was RI Wilson of the Eden Valley flock with ‘Eden Valley Dexter’, which was ranked in the top 5% EBVs. This ram lamb was sired by Sportsman A Star and purchased by local breeder RT & ME Sutton, Stainton.

The females always create plenty of interest at this sale with the consignment from PK & R Woof of the Stainton Flock leading the way. Topping at 3500gns was a Knock Yankee daughter out of an Anglezarke Uno ewe, captivated the ring and saw rapid bidding with the final bid coming from G Riby, Bridlington. Other gimmers in this pen sold to 2500gns sired by Auldhouseburn Bolt and out of the renowned 500 ewe line.

M Evans of the Rhaeadr flock saw his pen sell to a top of 1200gns for a gimmer from a very strong female line, sired by Garngour Alabama. Other gimmers reaching the 1000gns mark was an Auldhouseburn Boss daughter from the Cowel flock from KA & R Campbell, Argyll, a Lower Reiss Black Jack daughter from the Top Hill flock from JD Houghton, Bury and Teligum Braveheart daughter from the New View flock from Messrs Teward, Darlington.

Gimmer Lambs topped at 2400gns from AE Neachell & Son, Aldridge. This much-admired gimmer lamb was sired the 32,000gns Drumbredan Centre of Attention and out of the record breaking 5500gns Far Hey gimmer purchased at J36 in 2019. This outstanding gimmer attracted much attention from breeders and was purchased by AR & BJ Thompson, Selside. Selling to 1000gns was a Sportsman A Star lamb from RI Wilson, this gimmer was out of one of the best breeding ewes in the flock and purchased by R Evans, Minmsterley.
