Spring Lambs
There was an increased entry of 105 spring lambs at Lancaster, meeting plenty of demand and selling to a strong trade with an overall market average of 247p/kg and an SQQ of 255p/kg. It was Texel lambs from A & E Clarkson, Thurnham that topped the market selling to £130 or 289p/kg. Suffolk lambs from the same home sold to £120 with other Texel lambs to £119. Beltex lambs peaked at £127 or 318p/kg from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth. Texel lambs from PD Anderton, Scorton sold to £123 or 293p/kg. Continental lambs peaked at £115 from EM Cooper, Thornton in Cleveleys. Plenty of better conformation spring lambs sold in excess of the 270p/kg with a strong demand for these types of lambs at Lancaster.
Prime Hoggs
A smaller entry of prime hoggs forward this week saw the trade very similar to the previous week. There was little demand for heavy weight hoggs due to catering outlets not operating but handy weight and butchers’ type hoggs met plenty of interest. Beltex hoggs sold to a top of £115 or 245p/kg from JE Parkinson & Son, Quernmore who sold others to £110. The consignment of hoggs from GM & A Jackson, Little Eccleston saw Beltex sell to £110 or 234p/kg with other hoggs from this consignment selling to £100 three times. Beltex hoggs from W & J Livesey, Inskip selling to £110 or £234p/kg, with two further pens from the same home achieving £100. AG Butler, Hambleton sold hoggs sold to £108, £105 and £100 twice with Beltex hoggs from this consignment topping at 222p/kg. Helme & Procter, Grimsargh sold heavy weight Charollais to £101 and Continentals to £100.
Hill bred hoggs saw Cheviots sell to 202p/kg or £92 from GM & A Jackson, Little Eccleston. Horned hoggs sold to £80 for Lonks from Cardwell Farms, Stalmine.
Cast Sheep
There were fewer ewes on the market today but met a sharper trade to the previous week. Three quarter bred Texel ewes sold to £120 from JE Parkinson & Son, Quernmore. This was closely followed by other Texel ewes to £96 from JM Sanderson, Halton. Suffolk ewes topped at £89 from T Smith, Pilling. Mule ewes topped at £78 from JM Sanderson with Mashams to £76 from T Smith.
