Lancaster Livestock Auction: Store Cattle - Friday 24th April

Store Cattle

There was the largest entry of store cattle seen for some time at Lancaster which were met by good demand and a good trade, especially considering the drop in deadweight prices. The trade topped this week from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland selling Limousins to £1270 with Charolais to £1250 from the same home. Angus bullocks sold to £1220 from W & A Cardwell, Stalmine. There was plenty of other pens of strong bullocks selling in the late eleven hundreds. The heifer trade topped at £1200 for British Blues and Limousins from JS & KM Wilson, Helsington who sold Fleckvieh heifers to £1190. Other Limousin heifers sold to £1160 from R Collinge & Son, Kirkham with Angus heifers selling to £1150 from J Hesketh, Hutton.

Black and white bullocks sold to a top of £1090 from TJ Robinson, Milnthorpe. Closely followed by black and white bullocks at £1070 from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe.

Cast Cows

There was an increased entry of 114 Cast Cows at Lancaster today that were met by a very good trade, in which more are required with an overall market average of 125p/kg achieved. Considering that over 80% of the cattle forward being dairy bred, this is very impressive. Leading the way this week at 169.5p/kg was OTM Bullocks twice, firstly for South Devons from DR Preston, Ellel and secondly for Limousins from EJ Burrow, Storth. This was closely followed by Limousin heifers to 164.5p/kg from JM Capstick, Ashton with Stodday with British Blue heifers from C Wilson, Witherslack achieving the same price. Beef cast cows sold to a top of 164.5p/kg from D & DW Prickett, Farleton with Limousins. This was closely followed by Charolais to 161.5p/kg from F & IM Potter, Grayrigg.

Black and white OTM Heifers sold to 149.5p/kg and 147.5p/kg from JT Wilson, Bay Horse. Dairy cows sold to a top of 134.5p/kg from I Atkinson & Son, Warton. Plenty of good dairy cows selling to 129.5p/kg.

Top price per head today in the OTM ring was £1076 for an Angus cows from JE Bracken, St Michaels followed by Limousin heifers to £1059 from JM Capstick. Dairy cows sold to a top of £1037 from AW & AM Park & Sons, Ellel.

Calves & Stirks

The weekly sale of calves at Lancaster had a slightly smaller entry of 52 forward this week selling to an equally as strong trade as the previous week, with vendors well suited. The trade topped for weaned British Blue heifers selling to £385 and £365 twice from R Dick, Freckleton. The bull trade was topped by a smart six-week-old British Blue bull from AD & R Milner, Claughton on Brock selling to £370. Angus bull calves sold to £350 from David and Eileen Wallbank, Over Wyresdale and £330 from J & G Thornley, Kirkham. Angus heifers sold to £305 from David and Eileen Wallbank. Plenty of beef bull calves sold in the late two hundreds. Black and white bull calves peaked at £110 from Barker Farms, Warton.

Lancaster enjoyed another strong trade for stirks, well-grown grazing bullocks and heifers were in particularly strong demand and well-sold. It was British Blue heifers from DJ Clarke Farming, Barnacre that led the way at £890. The bullock trade topped at £845 for yearling Limousins from DJ Townley, Ashton with others from the same home selling to £790. Other noted bullock prices was £800 for British Blues from W Pinder, Newton in Bowland closely followed by £770 for Limousins from JE Harrison, Greenalgh and British Blues to the same price from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale and AW & AM Park & Sons, Ellel. Suckler bred 8-month-old British Blue bulls sold to £820 from CD & HL Mason, Caton Green. There was plenty of pens of yearling grazing cattle selling in excess of the £700 mark. Dairy bullocks saw Fleckviehs sell to £540 from P Rossall, Claughton on Brock with Montbarliardes selling to £490 and £485 from D Wilkinson, Pilling.
