J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: Primestock - Tuesday 21st April

Spring Lambs

The weekly sale of Spring Lambs had the largest entry so far this season with 89 forward met by plenty of demand and selling to a strong overall market average of 247p/kg and an SQQ of 250p/kg. Leading the way was a consignment from MJ Waller, Lupton selling 42kg Beltex lambs to £126 or 300p/kg with other Texels from the same home selling to £125 or 278p/kg. This was closely followed by £119 from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe with 47kg Texel lambs. Suffolks peaked 281p/kg or £118, once again, from MJ Waller. Suffolk lambs that also achieved £118 were from S Proctor, Selside. A large quantity of Dorsets forward today topped at £112 from S Proctor with others selling to £110 twice from Natalie Waller, Killington. All spring lambs forward averaged £106.70.

Prime Hoggs

There was another good entry of 953 Prime Hoggs forward at J36, as seen nationwide, plenty of heavy weight hoggs were on the market meeting a sticky trade with handy weighted hoggs selling to a strong trade. The market average was 205p/kg with an SQQ average of 215p/kg. The trade topped at £105.50 from SH & PI Bowes, Barrow in Furness with Texels. This was followed by Suffolks to £102.50 and Continentals to £100.50. Beltex hoggs sold to a top of £103 from S Harryman, Keswick. Others from the same home sold to 276p/kg. Hill bred hoggs saw Cheviots sell to £94.50 from Tyler Williamson, Ulverston with 43kg Mules selling to £93 from N & ME Harrison, Shap followed by Scottish Blackface hoggs to £92 weighing 42kg from Williamson Bros, Ulverston.

Cast Ewes

An entry of 340 Cast Sheep forward saw the trade remain decent. Buyers were very cautious of purchasing over fat sheep today with limited outlets for this specification at the moment. The trade peaked at £133 for Texel from WJ & L Barker, Arkholme closely followed by Suffolk ewes twice selling to £132 from CG Birkett, Carnforth. This was followed by £129 from H Wilson, Selside and then £126 from AR Edmondson, Ulverston. Charollais ewes topped at £124 from J Twigge, Lindale with Leicesters peaking at £119 from AR Edmondson, Ulverston. There was plenty of strong Continental ewes selling in excess of £110. The Mule ewe trade peaked at £86 from D & A Nicholson, Ulverston. Horned sheep saw Rough Fells sell to £84 from I & J Mallinson, Selside with Swaledale ewes to £80 from R Lawrence, Grange over Sands.
