Store Cattle

The weekly sale Store Cattle had a catalogued entry of 428 that saw Friesians bullocks sell to a good trade with others steady throughout, with vendors encouraged to sell cattle younger and not as big. The trade topped at £1200 today for a Limousin bullock from H Birkett & Son, Morecambe who sold other Limousins to £1100. This was closely followed by R & DM Rossall & Son, Pilling selling an Angus bullock to £1160 and British Blue bullocks to £1120. A run of Charolais bullocks from RH Dodgson, Burton-in-Lonsdale sold to £1100. There were several bullocks selling at the £1090 mark today, this included Limousins from J Lamb, Old Glasson, Limousins from R & J Dodgson, Natland and British Blues from A Thornton, Wood Plumpton. Heifers today topped at £1070 for a British Blue from R & DM Rossall & Son, pilling with other Blue heifers from JD & GM Bracken, Caterall selling at £1040. Angus heifers sold from V & EJ Chadwick, Sowerby sold to £1010.

Dairy bred bullocks topped at £1030 for Montbeliardes from H Birkett & Son.

OTM Cattle

There was a larger entry of cast cows forward this week with 132 put before a ring our busy ring of buyers. There was a plainer show of cows on offer todfay which were an easier trade but meated cows are still good to sell.

The cast ring was topped by a Charolais steer selling to 169.5p/kg which was followed by T & E Burrow, Slyne selling Angus steers to 157.5p/kg and 154.5p/kg. Cows this week sold to 134.5p/kg for a Limousin from E Dodgson, Kendal who sold another to 131.5p/kg. Friesian cows this week sold to 131.5p/kg from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe. Heifers sold to 141.5p/kg for a Friesian from EE Thornton & Son, Heaton.

Calves and Stirks

There was another good entry of 74 calves forward at Lancaster today which was mainly made up of younger sorts. Calf prices were easier than previous weeks with the finished beef price continuing to drop and filtering through to the calf trade. Top price today was £300 for an Angus bull from R & A Batterbee, Goosnargh with others selling to £280 and £275. British Blue bulls topped at £265 from RT Halhead, Cockerham for a month-old calf. Well-reared Montbeliardes from Colby Farms topped at £230. A consignment of young British Blue heifers from Richmond Hall Farms, Cockerham topped at £260 with other British Blues heifers from Cote Farm Partnership, Nether Kellet selling to £230. Charolais heifer calves from Colby Farms topped at £200. Friesian calves today topped at £130 from R &A Batterbee with other well-fed calves from WN & D Smith, Cockerham to £120.

Just a couple of stirks in today from Messrs Hey & Sons, Quernmore making £280 for five-month-old Hereford bulls.
