Lancaster Livestock Auction: Store Cattle - Friday 29th November

Store Cattle

One again, all classes of store cattle sold to a sharper trade at Lancaster. Topping the market this week was Limousin Steers selling to £1180 from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse closely followed by Limousin, once again, from H Birkett & Son, Overton with other Limousin bullocks selling to £1150 from M & L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale. Angus bullocks peaked at £1160 from WJ & L Barker, Arkholme and G Sagar & Son, Caton. Plenty more pens of strong well-fleshed steers sold in excess of the £1100 mark. Heifers topped at £1120 from R Collinge & Son, Kirkham with Limousins. British Blue heifers sold to £1050 from J Hesketh, Hutton. Angus heifers sold to £1040 from JW Atkinson, Bentham and R Escolme, Bay Horse.

Dairy bullocks topped at £1040 for Montbeliardes from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse who sold Fleckviehs to £1040. Black and whites topped at £1000 from L Parsons & Sons, Low Levens.

OTM Cattle

There was an entry of 112 cast cows forward that saw all types sell to a sharper trade. Lancaster continues to have a strong trade each week, better than local markets with vendors strongly urged to take advantage of our large number of buyers present, in which more cows are needed every week. There was an overall market average of 102.5p/kg. Cast cows sold to a top of 169.5p/kg or £1293 for Limousins from the Isle of Man. Black and white cows topped at 134.5p/kg from EE Thornton & Son, Heaton, top-grossing black and white cow was £1015 from Bradleys Farms, Preesall. OTM Heifer and Steers continue to be in strong demand at Lancaster with and Angus steer topping at 169.5p/kg or £1271 from M Shepherd & Son, Pilling. Limousin heifers topped at 159.5p/kg from DE & J Barton, Arkholme. Limousin cast bulls sold to 144.5p/kg or £1365 from A & J Staveley, High Tatham.

Calves & Stirks

There as an entry of 112 Stirks forward today at Lancaster, in which more could have been sold to the advantage of the vendor. There was plenty of interest ringside, which saw the consignment from JE Harrison, Greenhalgh top the market selling British Blue bullocks to £820, Simmental heifers to £770, Angus bullocks to £660, Hereford heifers to £660 and Angus and Limousin heifers £620. February born Limousin bullocks sold to £665 from R & A Jolleys, Cabus who sold Limousin heifers to £535. Summer born Suckler bred Charolais bullocks from DM Eames, Abbeystead sold to £590 with Heifers selling to £510. Dairy bullocks saw Montbeliardes sell to £550 and black and whites to £525 from JE Harrison with other Montbeliardes to £520 from WG Farms Ltd, Cockerham. Bull stirks sold to £520 and £500 for Angus’ from JK & B Birkett & Son, Morecambe.

Calves were a slightly easier trade this week with a large proportion of calves’ forward being younger, and many people holding on to their show calves ahead of the Christmas show next week. The trade peaked at £270 for Simmental bull calves from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green. Angus bull calves sold to £230 from AD & R Milner, Claughton on Brock with British Blue bulls to £230 and heifers to £220 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. Black and white calves were a sharper trade this week, especially the smaller ones with the trade topping at £62 from Drinkall Bros, with others to £60 from D & K Howarth, Hambleton.
