Lancaster Livestock Auction: Christmas Primestock Show - Monday 2nd December

Prime Lambs

Lancaster Auction held it’s annual Christmas Show of Prime Lambs on Monday 2nd December. A special thank you goes to our vendors for their support throughout the year and thank you for supporting us today with over 30 pens forward for our judge Mr George Harryman, Hawkshead who we thank for his time and expertise. The Championship Rosette and the John Edward Kellet Memorial Cup was awarded to GR & A Foy, Conder Green. These were the first-place pen of five lowland lambs which were Dutch Texels that went onto sell for £130 or 317p/kg purchased by Mohamad Alam, Blackburn on behalf of Gregory Williams Butchers, Lancaster. The Reserve Champion rosette was awarded to WM Pye, Ashton with Stodday with 45kg Scottish Blackface selling to £90, who also won the John Dickinson Memorial Cup for the Champion pen of horned lambs.

There was a slightly reduced entry of 676 forward selling to a very similar trade with an overall market average of 180p/kg and an SQQ average of 181p/kg. Once again, well-fleshed lambs were in strong demand and best to sell better conformation lambs regularly sold around the 200p/kg mark, with all Beltex lambs forward averaging 213p/kg.

Cast Sheep

More cast sheep continue to be required at Lancaster with the trade topping at £124 for Charollais cast tups from Bargh Contractors, Heaton with Oxcliffe. Texel tups sold to £111 from DJ Hay, Cockerham. Mule ewes topped at £85 from TB Carter, Preesall with Suffolk ewes selling to the same price. Texel ewes sold to £84 three times. Strong Mule ewes regularly sold in the mid to late seventies. Sheep numbers now begin to tighten with more required each week.
