Store Cattle

Lancaster had its weekly sale which, once again, had an entry over 200 forward. Topping the market today at £1240 was JB Moore, Grange-over-Sands with a Hereford Bullock. This was followed by £1160 achieved numerous times by Limousins from H Birkett & Son, Overton, Herefords from AS & D Parker, Nateby, British Blues from R Speak, Eccleston and Angus’ from D France, Over Wyresdale. Limousin heifers also sold tot £1160 from JS & KM Wilson & Son, Kendal. There was plenty of short keep beef bred bullocks and heifers selling in the early to mid eleven hundreds. Friesian heifers sold to a top of £1120 from JG & BJ Escolme, Killington. MRI bullocks sold to £1070 from Barlow Bros, Croston and Montbeliardes sold to £1050 from J Lamb, Old Glasson. Black and white bullocks sold to £1020 from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe.

OTM Cattle

Cast cows this week saw a slightly smaller entry of 68 forward which were predominately made up of black and white and dairy cows leading to a slightly easier market average of 115p/kg. Leading the way this week was cast Simmental steers from E Rossall, Preesall selling to 184.5p/kg or £1328. OTM Heifers sold to a top of 164.5p/kg for Continental heifers from Low Moor Howe, Windermere. British Blue cows topped at 154.5p/kg or £1166 from A & P Hodgkinson, Stalmine with other British Blue cows to 154.5p/kg or £1154 from FA Nowell & Partners, Bentham. OTM Heifers sold to a top of 151.5p/kg from MJ & K Ayrton, Thurnham for black and whites. Black and white cows sold to a top of £951 from MJ Fell, Whittington.

Calves and Stirks

Lancaster held it’s monthly sale of Stirks which had an entry of 139 forward. The trade saw stronger and hardened off grazing types in strong demand and very good to sell and grass continues to grow in the area. Younger softer types still met plenty of demand. Leading the way this week was British Blue bullocks from JE Harrison, Greenholme selling to £780. Yearling Limousin bullocks sold to a top of £770 and £740 from WJ & EA Woodhouse, Nateby. British Blue bullocks from MJ Whitworth, Bolton-le-Sands sold to £765 at 9 months old. Yearling Hereford bullocks from G & ID Postlethwaite, Howgill sold to £730. This was closely followed by Angus’ from JE Harrison selling to £720 and £690. Heifers sold to a top of £745 for Limousins from D Atkinson, Quernmore. Hereford and Angus heifers sold to £600 from D Atkinson and MG & WD Burton, Barnard Castle. Bulls sold a top of £580 for Angus’ from S Kellet & Son, Pilling with British Blues to £545 from JK & B Birkett & Son, Morecambe. Dairy bred bullcoks saw Montbeliardes sell to £580 and £550 from JR Pye, Stalmine, with 10 month old Black and whites from the same home sell to £515. British Friesian bullocks at 5 months sold to £470 from EE Thornton & Sons, Heaton.

There was a smaller entry of calves this week in which more are needed but all forward were met by a strong trade. Hereford bulls sold to £235 and £190 at 3 weeks old from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green with Hereford heifers from the same home. Black and white calves topped at £92 and £88 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with and black and white calves forward this week averaging £79.
