J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: Store Cattle - Thursday 30th May

Calves

There was a larger entry of calves this week which was met by plenty of interest ringside. A nice run of Hereford calves from Lawkland Hall Farm head to the top price of £425 for a fantastic 8 week old calf. Blue bulls met another strong trade at J36 with best sorts £340 to £380, peaking at £405 from W & S Airey, Whittington who also sold Angus Heifers to £310 twice. A month old Limousin bull calf from B & MJ Nelson & Son, Milnthorpe topped at £260. There was a sharp trade for black and white this week, topping the trade at £115 was a Friesian Bull from T & J Pritt, Wabberthwaite. Plenty of nice rearing types sold in the late seventies and eighties.

A bigger show of stirks on offer this fortnight Sold to a nice trade, which saw a 6 mouth old British bull bullock sell to £545 from RI Dixon, Low Newton. Limousin bullocks at the same age from MH & AR Robinson, Old Hutton made £530. A nice 5 month old British Blue heifer from RI Dixon, Low Newton peaked at £470. A run of Black and white bulls from Messrs Dennison, Aldingham peaked the trade at £320.

Cast Cows

Cull cows sold to a top price of 137p/kg for a shorthorn cow from GA Lambert Gatebeck, with other beef cows generally 129p/kg – 1.32p/kg. Dairy cows sold to a top of 124p/kg from JM Barton & Son, Lupton. Well-fleshed dairy cows achieved between 119p/kg to 122p/kg with parlour sorts 114-118p/kg depending on type and quality.

Top grossing dairy cow was £964 from C Gibson & Son, Burneside, with beef cows selling to £947 for a shorthorn from GA Lambert, Gatebeck.

A few OTMs about this morning with a top of £1065 or 139p/kg from a Limousin bullock from JE Read.

Store Cattle

There was a smaller seasonal entry of Store Cattle on offer today which were met by a good enquiry with good well-grown sorts commanding most interest. Poorer sorts were slightly harder to place. Leading the way today was F & JM Mason, Mansergh who sold 13 month old Limousin heifers to £820. Messrs MW & M Hodgson, Cartmel Fell sold 10 month old Limousin steers to £790 with the same vendor selling 12 month old Charolais to £760 and Limousins heifers to £750. Mr GM Strong, Penrith sold a 16 month old Blue x to £780.
