Prime Hoggs
The buzz is back at Lancaster with, once again, an increased entry selling to a sharper trade. There was an overall market average of 183p/kg which is very strong considering the large amount of horned and Mule hoggs forward for the sale today. Top price this week was £101 or 220p/kg for Beltex hoggs from AG Butler, Hambleton who also sold Texel hoggs to £99, £98 and £97. Also achieving £97 was DM Cardwell, Stalmine with Suffolk Suffolks selling to £96 from T Smith, Pilling. Plenty of pens of hoggs sold into the nineties. Charollais hoggs sold to 212p/kg from T Smith with numerous pens of well-finished Continental hoggs selling easily around the 200p/kg. Cheviot hoggs sold to a top of £85 from A & J Smith, Ingleton or 195p/kg from T Smith. Mules sold to a top of £81.50 from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe with others to £81 from Cardwell Farms, Stalmine. Horned hoggs sold to a top of £77.50 from WN Pye, Ashton-with-Stodday. Ligher weight mid 30kg hoggs were a sharper trade this week, especially hill bred hoggs.
Cast Sheep
The cast sheep saw a big jump in prices and much more are needed for our busy ring of buyers. Leading the way today were Texel ewes at £106 was D & K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe, £105 from T & CM Kelsall, Chipping and £101 also achieved for Texel ewes from JK & BE Townley, Brookhouse. All Texels ewes forward averaged £90.45. Continental ewes topped at £96 from Myerscough College, Mule ewes sold to a top of £86 from D & K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe and £82 from RW & FJ Rhodes, Quernmore. All Mule ewes forward averaged £70.26. Horned ewes topped at £58 from RW & FJ Rhodes, with Cheviots selling to £55 from KM & KJ Curwen, Abbeystead. All cast sheep forward averaged £70.13.
Some Boar Goats forward today sold to £88 and £73 from SE Peacock, Cockerham.
Sheep with Lambs at Foot
The weekly sale of Sheep with Lambs at Foot saw another sharp trade at Lancaster leading the way this week was broken mouthed Continental ewes with twins selling to £188 from D & K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Correct two crop Mule ewes with Twin lambs at foot sold to £170 five times from PD Anderton, Scorton. Broken mouthed Mule ewes with twins sold to £170 twice and £168 twice from D & K Swarbrick, with Masham ewes from the same home selling to £162. Broken mouthed Mule ewes with singles sold to £128.
