Store Cattle

An entry of 200 Store Cattle today saw all types slightly sharper this week in which more could have easily been sold. The trade this week topped at £1330 for British Blue bullocks from P Lawrenson & Son, Chorley who also sold Limousin bullocks £1320. Charolais topped at £1290 from TN Pye & Partners, Lancaster with Angus bullocks topping at £1230 from H Birkett & Son, Overton. It was great to have plenty of large framed, well-fleshed bullocks selling in the twelve hundreds. Heifer trade was topped at £1270 for an Angus from JB Moore, Grange-Over-Sands, with Hereford Heifers selling to £1210 from J Hesketh, Hutton. Bulls topped at £1180 from MJ Whitworth, Bolton-le-Sands.

Friesian bullocks sold to a top of £1060 from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe with other big, framed bullocks selling around the £1000 mark.

OTM Cattle

There was an entry of 98 OTMs that saw all specifications sell to a slightly sharper trade with an overall market average of 98p/kg. Topping the trade this week was a Limousin cast bull from EE Thornton & Son, Heaton selling to 184.5p/kg or £1055. Cows sold to a top of 179.5p/kg from MS Blease, Carnforth. Young black and white cows twice sold to 149.5p/kg from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick and H Wright & Son, Kendal. Beef cows sold to a top at £1004 from BT Atkinson, Ulverston with Blondes. Friesian cows topped at £935 from MG Fell Ltd, Whittington.

Calves and Stirks

The opening sale of 2019 for Calves saw an entry of 73 forward which were easily handled by a busy ring of buyers, in which more could have been sold and vendors are urged to continue to support Lancaster to keep buyers coming forward. Once again, best British Blue bulls sold in excess of the £400 mark topping at £425 and £405 from J & G Thornley, Kirkham with Blue bulls from David & Eileen Wallbank, Over Wyresdale selling to £420. British Blue heifers sold to a top of £390 and £385 from J & G Thornley with David and Eileen Wallbank selling theirs to £380. Native bull calves saw Angus’ sell to a top of £360 and £350 from David and Eileen Wallbank. Month old Limousin bull calves topped at £305 from B & MJ Nelson & Son, Milnthorpe with plenty of other young beef calves easily selling to the early two hundreds.

The black and white trade topped at £105 and £100 from David and Eileen Wallbank with plenty of young rearing black and whites selling around £70 mark.
