Lancaster Livestock Auction: Store Cattle - Friday 22nd February

Store Cattle

The Store Cattle trade at Lancaster was slightly easier today with the deadweight price being dropped once again this week, although this was still met with a busy ringside of buyers all of whom are still wanting cattle. Topping the market this week was a Limousin bullock from PM & ST Entwistle, Abbeystead selling to £1310. A consignment from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse saw Montbeliardes sell to £1290 with British Blues from the same good home selling to £1260. Saler bullocks sell to a top of £1240 from H Chapman & Son, Middleton with Fleckviehs selling to £1230 from WS Burrow & Sons, Silverdale. Native cattle are always in good demand at Lancaster which saw Angus’ sell to £1200 from M & SG Mason, Kirkby Lonsdale. Leading the way with the heifers this week was JD & GM Bracken, Catterall with his consignment of Angus’ selling to £1160. British Blues also achieved the same price from H & C Pickervance, Kirkham. Black and Whites sold to a top of £980 from W Burrow & Sons, Silverdale.

OTM Cattle

The weekly sale of Cast Cows and OTM Cattle at Lancaster had a much smaller entry of 68 forward in which more are needed to fulfil our busy ringside of buyers requirements. Vendors are urged to take advantage of the current strong market trade. Lancaster Market enjoyed a strong average of 116p/kg. Leading the way today was OTM Limousin Heifers from JA & KM Allen, Ings selling to 194.5p/kg or £1028. Cast Steers saw British Blues sell to 169.5p/kg from J & CH Brennand, Ingleto. Black and whites topped at 161.5p/kg or £1199 from J & M Sanderson, Kirkham with others to 157.5p/kg from RW Bainbridge & Son, Whittington. Top price per head today was a Limousin bull from WI & A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale selling to £1410.

Calves and Stirks

The renowned monthly Stirk sale had a smaller entry then anticipated but there was plenty of demand ringside ensuring a sharp trade. Leading the way today at £700 was Shorthorn bullocks from J & DE Mitchell & Son, Cabus who sold heifers to £620 and other bullocks to £620 as well. Herefords topped at £690 from E Lund & Son, Ingleton. A consignment of British Blues from JE Harrison, Preston saw the bullocks sell to £680, £670 and £660. The bull trade was topped by SJ Gunn, Milnthorpe selling Angus bulls to £580. Black and White bullocks sold to a top of £470 from DC Miller, Claughton on Brock with others to £455 from R & A Jolleys, Cabus. Cattle that would be fit for turnout this Spring were in the strongest demand today.

There was an entry of 82 calves forward this week which saw beef calves and black and whites in strong demand. Weaned Angus bull calves topped at £460 from AW & AM Park & Sons, Ellel, with others selling to £435 from the same home, British Blues selling to £400 from the same home. There was certainly plenty of interest around the ring today for British Blues with consignments of Blue Bull calves from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresadale selling to £395 and £390 with others from RA & E Edmondson, Kendal selling to £380. Blue heifer calves topped at £305 from JR Handley, Whinfel and others to £300 from Drinkall Bros.

All specifications of Black and Whites were a stronger trade today topping at £90 numerous times.
