J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: Store Cattle - Thursday 21st February


A good day in the calf ring with a full ringside of buyers meant a strong trade was seen today. A run of 15 beef calves from RA & E Edmondson, Levens topped the day’s trade with a British Blue heifer selling to £300, with a month old Blue heifer from DW Cottam, New Hutton making £270. Native bred beef bulls were in strongest demand topping at £280 from RA & E Edmondson with others from the same home selling to £260 for month old calves. A young show of black and whites, with nothing over a month old, topped at £50 from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick.

A few stirks about this morning topping at £415 for 5 month old Angus heifers from JA & S Johns, Brough with Blue bulls from the same home making £410.

Cast Cows

Cull cows sold to 149.5p/kg for Stabiliser x from A Dixon & Son with 131.5p/kg from MJ & JD Handley, other heavy beef cows 120p/kg – 130p/kg, feeding types 110p/kg – 118p/kg. Dairy cows sold to 97.5p/kg from HJ Robinson & Son, parlour cows generally 75p/kg – 85p/kg with leaner sorts less. Top grossing cows were £1098 from MJ & JD Handley. All cull cows averaged 99p/kg.

OTM steers sold to 184.5p/kg (£1195) for Hereford x from DJ Dickinson. OTM heifers to 184.5p/kg (£1175) for a Stabiliser from A Dixon & Son who sold clean heifers to 189.5p/kg (£1028).

Store Cattle

A younger entry of cattle forward today and selling to a keen ringside of buyers with all classes and types easily sold. Vendors are encouraged to enter cattle for the next sale on Thursday 7th March which will include a prize show for cattle up to 12 months old.

The sale topped at £790 for an 8 month old Limousin x steer from CI Briggs with Aberdeen Angus x achieving £740 from J Stott Jnr, others £690. Hereford x steers £630 from JH & A Metcalfe & Son. Several dairy steers were forward selling at £640 from JH Barker & Son.

Heifers sold to £750 for Aberdeen Angus from G Cuthbertson with 8 month old Charollais x £720 and £710 from CI Briggs. Hereford x to £710 from PJ Stuart. A nice run of 8 month old BB x sold at £650, £620 from JE Harrison.
