Store Cattle

There was a good number of store cattle forward this week, which were met with an equally good trade. Leading the way this week was Limousin bullocks from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton selling to £1280 for Limousin and Simmental bullocks from H Chapman & Son, Middleton selling to £1260 with the consignment from R & A Easterby, Carnforth selling Limousin bullocks to £1230 and £1220. Other Limousins bullocks from ID Bailey & Son, Catforth also achieved the £1220 mark. Charolais bullocks twice peaked at £1190 from EW & A Bradshaw, Stalmine and from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland. Native bullocks sold to a top of £1160 for Herefords from J Hesketh, Hutton with Angus’ selling to £1140 from PR Holt, Thornton Cleveley. 37 bullocks sold in excess of £1100 mark.

Heifers sold a top of £1090 for Simmentals from JD & GM Bracken, Catterall with Angus heifers selling to £1080 from J Hesketh.

Dairy bullocks sold to a top of £1010 for Fleckviehs from J Lamb, Old Glasson with black and whites selling to a top of £950 from WR Clarke, Pilling.

OTM Cattle

Lancaster held its last sale of 2019 which had a bumper entry of 156 selling to an exceptional trade. Topping the market today was shorthorn cows from J Drinkall Ltd, Anglezarke selling 164.5p/kg. This was closely followed by blonde cows selling to 157.5p/kg from MJ Whitworth, Bolton-le-Sands. Young black and white bulls sold to a top of 157.5p/kg from L Parsons & Sons, Levens with steers selling to a top of 154.5p/kg for an Angus from JS & S Atkinson, Scorton. OTM Dairy heifers sold to a top of 149.5p/kg from AW & AM Park & Sons, Ellel with others selling in the mid one hundred and forties. Dairy cows sold to a top of 131.5p/kg twice for Montbeliardes from A & FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel with black and white cows to the same price from EW & RM Towers, Hornby. Plenty of well-fleshed dairy cows selling in the 120p/kg range.

Top-grossing price was an Angus bull selling to £1316 from MS & G Mason, Kirkby Lonsdale with British Blue bulls selling to £1151 from R Baguley, Blackpool. Montbeliarde cows peaked at £1117 from A & FM Bolland & Sons and Blonde cows sold to £1094 from MJ Whitworth. Plenty more cows this week sold in excess of the £1000 mark.

There was an overall market average of 112p/kg.

Calves & Stirks

Lancaster’s weekly sale of claves included the monthly sale of stirks today due to our Christmas fixtures. There was an entry of 185 forward. There was busy ringside of buyers which saw plenty of demand for stirks. Leading the way this week was Angus bullocks from KA Purtill, Wigan with other Angus bullocks selling to £755 from T & G Dobson, Appleby with the consignment from JE Harrison, Greenhalgh selling Angus bullocks to £755, British Blues to £740 and £700. A consignment from WG Farms Ltd, Cockerham saw Angus bullocks sell to £740 and £715. May 2019 born Charolais bullocks sold to a top of £710 from DC Miller, Claughton-on-Brock.

The heifer trade peaked at £660 for Limousins from T & G Dobson, with British Blue heifers selling to £605 and £600 from JE Harrison, Greenhalgh. March 2019 born Shorthorn bull stirks sold to £770 from Messrs Hodgson, Rydal. British Blue bulls sold to £600 from AK & BM Robinson & Son, Arkholme. Black and white bullocks sold to a top of £550 from WG Farms, Cockerham. Others from the same home sold to £460. Yearling black and white bullocks regularly sold in excess of the £400 mark. 6-7-month-old bull stirks sold to £290 from MJ & K Ayrton, Thurnham.

There was a good number of 69 calves forward to end the season with, which sold to a strong trade, once again. Topping the market today was a Charolais bull calf from TM Townley, Over Wyresdale selling to £400. British Blue bulls sold to a top of £290 and £270 from T & CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping with other British Blue bull calves selling to £280 from A Pickthall, New Hutton. Angus bull calves sold to a top of £280 from TM Townley, Over Wyredale. Plenty of strong beef bull calves sold in the mid-two hundreds. Beef heifer calves sold to a top of £210, three times from A Pickthall.

Black and white bull calves sold to a top of £105 from RE & P Miller, Barnacre.
