530 Cattle Forward For Lancaster Friday

Store Cattle

The weekly sale of store cattle had an entry just short of 300 forward for the sale selling to a slightly sharper trade as numbers every start to tighten. The trade topped at £1380 for a pen of four Angus steers from R Collinge & Son, Kirkham. Topping the Continental trade was Limousin bullocks from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland with Blonde bullocks selling to £1300 from DW & NM Alderson, Sedbergh. The heifer trade was topped by RS Mitchell of Ellel selling Limousin Heifers to £1280 closely followed by Simmentals from TJ Lloyd Farm, Settle selling £1270. 15% of the cattle forward sold in excess of £1200. All bullocks sold to an overall average of £1030.

Black and white bullocks sold to a top of £970 from TJ Lloyd Farm closely followed by £950 from J Hartley & Son, West House.

OTM Cattle

An entry just short of 100 Cast cows this week sold to a slightly sharper trade for all types. Young beef cows sold to a top of 189.5p/kg for Limousins from T Ayrton & Sons, Over Wyresdale grossing at £1248. Cast Steers topped at 179.5p/kg for British Blues from D Winder, Cockerham. Friesian sold to a top of 144.5p/kg from TD & B Whitaker, Winmarghleigh closely followed by 139.5p/kg from CJ & MH Parry, Cockerham. The overall market average was 102p/kg with a very ‘back end’ entry as many off load leaner cows for the winter.

Calves and Stirks

The weekly sale of calves, which included the monthly sale of Stirks attracted the largest entry seen for some months with well over 100 stirks forward for the sale, attracting many regular and fresh buyers. There was a stronger trade than anticipated with all specifications selling nicely in which more could have been sold to the advantage of the vendor. Stirk trade was topped by Hereford steers selling to £690 from R & A Jolleys of Cabus with Stabilisers selling to £670 from Cote Farm Partnership, Nether Kellet. British Blue and Angus steers from the same home sold to £655 with Angus’ from ME Forshaw & Son, Longridge selling to £645. British Blue heifers topped at £660 from Cote Farm Partnership. Bulls topped at £555 for a pen of Five Angus’ from D Atkinson, Quernmore. A strong black and white trade saw yearling bullocks top at £520 and £485 from MJ & K Ayrton, Thurnham with British Friesian bullocks selling to £485 from C Stackhouse, Kirkham.

Once again, a good calf trade at Lancaster in which more are needed, topping this week at £450 were British Blues from Cote Farm Partnership closely followed by other British Blue bulls selling to £420 from G & ME Woodhouse & Son, Ellel. The heifer calf trade was topped at £375 for British Blues from G & ME Woodhouse. Black and whites calves sold in plenty of demand topping at £205 from RT Halhead, Cockerham closely followed by £195 from Drinkall Brothers, Over Wyresdale with all black and white calves forward selling to an average of £104.
