Lancaster Livestock Auction: Store Cattle - Friday 19th October

Store Cattle

There was a smaller entry of Store Cattle today that saw well-fleshed and big framed cattle continue to be a good trade. Topping the trade today was Limousin Steers from P Lawrenson & Son, Chorley selling to £1420; this was closely followed by British Blue from the same good home selling to £1400 and £1390. There were twenty bullocks that sold for £1300 or more. Native cattle continue to sell well at Lancaster, topping at £1350 from H & JA Gorst, Caldervale with a Beef Shorthorn Bullock. Angus bullocks sold to a top of £1260 from JF & HE Caton, Cowan Bridge. The Heifer trade was topped by British Blues from WS Burrow & Son, Silverdale selling to £1150. Numbers are now beginning to tighten for Store Cattle nationally buyers were slightly keener for all types of cattle. Black and whites sold to a slightly sharper trade this week with buyers looking for cattle carrying flesh and good conformation.

OTM Cattle

The weekly sale of Cast Cows had a smaller entry of 86 forward selling to a strong trade better then other local markets with buyers eagerly bidding for all cattle . Topping the trade today were clean Angus heifers selling to 189.5p/kg or £1013 from P & A Bell, Pilling. This was closely followed by Cast Steers selling to 181.5p/kg or £1274 D Burrow, Arkholme. Cast Cows twice topped at 174.5p/kg for Limousins from T Ayrton & Sons, Over Wyresdale and also for Simmentals from RA Gibbon, Grange-over-Sands. Good meated beef cows were still selling in excess of 145p/kg. Cast Bulls sold to a top of 134.5p/kg for Angus’ from AW & AM Park & Sons, Ellel. Dairy cows sold to a top of 124.5p/kg for Montbeliardes from T & JM Fawcett & Son, Cowan Bridge.

Black and white cows topped at 117.5p/kg with them regularly around the 115p/kg mark.

Calves and Stirks

The weekly sale of calves at Lancaster saw an entry of in excess of 50 forward for the sale which saw a busy ringside selling to a vibrant trade with beef calves all well bid for and more could have been sold to the advantage of the vendor. There was a young entry of calves forward this week with the trade topping £350 for British Blues from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth with Blue heifers selling to £305 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale. Native calves sold to a top of £315 for Angus’ again from Wallbank Farms. Limousin Bull calves topped at £300 from JM & MH France & Son, Little Dale and others sold to £290 from MH & AR Robinson, Old Hutton. A consignment of month old Simmental bull calves from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green sold to £280 and £275.

A lot of young black and white calves this week with buyers looking to purchase big fit calves with the trade topping at £100 from WN & D Smith, Cockerham.
