J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: Second Show & Sale of Suckler Calves - Thursday 1st November

Suckled Calves

The second sale of suckled calves saw a catalogued entry of 375 which attracted buyers from throughout the Northern counties, the Midlands, Scotland and Wales, with new customers in attendance both buying and selling.
The pre-sale show was kindly judged by Mr Frank Joel of Westhouse who had an outstanding entry of 35 show calves presented before him in three classes. The Championship Rosette was awarded to an 8 moth old Limousin x steer from T W Gorst, Crook which later sold for the sale’s top price of £900. The Reserve Champion was a 6 month old British Blue x steer from NA Temple, Ulpha which achieved £800. Strongest steers generally were £780 to £860, all steers sold averaged £710 with a large portion being 5 months old.

Heifers sold to £860 for a smart Charolais x from TM & D Dobson with an Angus x from J & M Wilson, catching many eyes selling at £800. Nicely grown heifers regularly selling between £680 and £800 with smaller, younger sorts £520 to £640, all sold averaging £595.

Young bulls sold to £870 for Limousin x from W & T Danson & Son who sold others at £850. The first prize bull from GR & A Foy being a 6 month old British Blue x selling for £760. All young bulls averaged £620, being predominantly 4 to 6 months old.

Calves

The fortnightly sale of calves and stirks at J36 had a smaller offering forward this week with a better trade than anticipated with plenty of buyers ringside. Topping the trade today was British Blue bulls from R Morris-Eyton & Son, Whicham. Angus bull calves sold to a top of £295 and £290 from DR & C Galbraith, Grayrigg. Plenty of well-grown beef calves sold in the mid two hundreds. There was a buoyant trade for Black and White calves with these being well bid for selling to a top of £90 from RH & J Clark, Far Audlands.

An offering of Stirks on the market today saw Limousin heifers sell to a top of £500 from GD Tyson, Haverigg with black and white stirks topping at £260 from W Atkinson & Son, Crook.

Cast Cows

A larger entry of 47 cows forward at the fortnightly sale saw a larger number of leaner cows presented than the previous sales. Beef cows sold to 125p/kg for Limousin x from G H Jones and J & J Postlethwaite, others regularly selling between 105p/kg and 115p/kg for further feeding. Heavy dairy cows sold around the 90p/kg to 110p/kg mark, with leaner sorts 75p/kg to 85p/kg.

Top grossing cow was £873 for a Limousin x from J & J Postlethwaite and top grossing dairy cow was £845 from R & J Dodgson. Several cull bulls were forward selling to 100p/kg or £1014 from W Caley & Son.

Breeding Cattle

The monthly sale of beef breeding cattle saw an entry of predominantly older cows with calves forward, selling to £1020 for a Limousin x cow with a Limousin bull calf from TLB & J Knowles.

In-calf Hereford x heifers achieved £900 with Limousin x heifers to £850. Bulling heifers sold to £800 for Limousin x and pure Herefords.

Store Cattle

A pleasing entry of over 100 store cattle followed the suckled calves with buyers present to compete for all types. Steers sold to £900 for a Charolais x from T Longton & Son with other stronger sorts (14m – 18m) selling between £800 and £880 and wintering steers were £680 to £750. Several dairy bred steers were forward today with black and whites selling to £530 and younger sorts selling between £440 and £500.

Store heifers topped at £880 for Limousin x from Pearson & Jackson and a British Blue x from I Dobson, other feeding heifers generally were £750 to £850. Younger heifers for wintering were £520 to £680.
