Store Cattle
The sale of Store Cattle saw a reduced entry due to the bank holiday weekend but this had no effect on trade with a strong prices achieved thought-out the sale.
The trade topped this week for Limousin Bullocks at £1390 from WA Hodgson, Whinfell. This was closely followed by Charolais Bullocks selling to £1340 from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland.
Aberdeen Angus Bullocks twice sold to a top of £1340 firstly for a pen of four from G Sagar & Son, Caton and then a pen of three from EW & CR Clegg & Son, Stalmine.
Heifers saw British Blues sell to £1310 from ME & J Swarbrick, Poulton le Fylde.
Black and White Bullocks sold to a top of £1120 from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe.
Cast Cows
There was a small entry of Cast Cows forward with 30 in the market selling to an overall average of 128p/kg.
Limousin Cows sold to a top of 171.5p/kg or £1203 from T & S Blades, Arkholme with plenty of well fleshed beef cows selling between 145-170p/kg.
Black and White Heifers sold to a top of 167.5p/kg from AB & J Parkinson & Son, Out Rawcliffe with Black and White Cows selling to 149.5p/kg from T & CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping. All black and whites forward sold to an overall market average of 131.5p/kg.
Calves & Stirks
The monthly sale of Stirks including the weekly sale of calves saw the largest entry forward for the sale for sometime with 175 going under the gavel.
The Stirk sale attracted plenty of interest from buyers with the busiest ringside seen for sometime with many potential buyers leaving empty handed and some not being able to get a bid. The entry consisted of Continental, Native and Black and White Stirks ranging from weanlings to yearling cattle with the majority being the 5-6months age.
The trade sold to a top of £680 for a Hereford Heifer from J Maxwell, Halton. August born British Blue Steers sold to a top of £610 from M & M Carr, Burton in Kendal. July born Hereford Steers sold to £590 from R & A Jolleys, Cabus. There was plenty of continental bred steers selling mid to late five hundreds.
Three month old Aberdeen Angus Bulls from J & M Sanderson, Kirkham sold to £410 .
June and July born Black and White Bulls sold to £390 from RE & P Miller, Barnacre. Yearling Black and White Bullocks sold to a top of £550 from WJ & EA Woodhouse, Nateby.
The strong demand for Stirks will continue until the Spring, with our next Stirk sale being Friday 27th April.
The weekly sale of Calves saw Three week old British Blue Bulls sell to £275 from T & CM Kelsall & Son, Chipping with others from the same good home selling to £270.
Black and White Bull calves saw best ones selling over the £100 mark, topping at £115 from WN & D Smith, Cockerham.
