Spring Lambs
A smaller entry of spring lambs forward this week at Lancaster saw plenty of interest from buyers once again. The trade topped at £143 for 49kg Charolais lambs from Neil Sutcliffe of Cockerham. This was closely followed by JD & V Towers of Farleton selling to £140 or 318p/kg with a pair of Charolais weighing 44kg. Lambs twice topped at 324p/kg firstly from JD & V Towers of Farleton with 42kg Charolais lambs with W Bradley of Goosnargh selling 34kg to £110. There was an overall market average of 310p/kg.
Prime Hoggs
A stronger trade than expected following the Easter Bank Holiday Weekend with 374 forward selling to an overall market average of 225p/kg with 39-45kg selling to an average of 238p/kg with 45-52kg Hoggs sold to an average of 250p/kg.
Inside fed and well fleshed Hoggs sold to a strong premium where more could have easily been sold. Topping the trade today at £146 was heavy weight Texel Hoggs from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth who also sold Hoggs to 304p/kg for 47kg amounting to £143, the entire consignment from the Sanderson Family average £142.
There were numerous pens of good quality Continental and Suffolk Hoggs selling between £120-£130.
Mule Hoggs sold to a top of £111 from JW & SE Drinkwater, Quernmore. Horned Hoggs sold to £108.50 or 258p/kg for 42kg Scotch Blackfaces from WM Pye, Ashton with Stodday.
Cast Sheep
More Cast Sheep could have been sold this morning with once again all selling to a strong trade with vendors urged to take advantage of this.
Topping the trade today was Elsie Hartley, Hornby with Texel Ewes selling to £120. Suffolk Ewes sold to £108 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth.
Breeding Sheep
The largest entry of Sheep with Lambs at Foot this season at Lancaster saw 65 outfits or 175 lives forward. Despite the very wet wintery weather there was plenty of interest ringside with everything well bid for.
Topping the sale was D & K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe selling Continental Ewes with Twins to £188. This was closely followed by £182 for Continental Ewes with Twins of WW Hunter & Sons, Cockerham. Aged Mule Ewes with Twin Texel Lambs sold to a top of £180 from D & K Swarbrick who also sold three further pens to £175.
Continental Ewes with Single Lambs sold to a top of £135 from WW Hunter & Sons with two further pens from the same good home selling to £130.
