Store Cattle
The opening New Year’s sale of store cattle at Lancaster had a catalogued entry of 260. There was plenty of interest from buyers looking to replenish empty pens following the Christmas break. There was a brisk trade throughout the sale for all ages and sizes of cattle, with short term cattle in strongest demand.
Best big framed bullocks sold in excess of £1300 topping at £1360 for a pair of stylish Limousin bullocks from DE & SM Moorhouse of High House Farm. British Blue bullocks sold to £1340 for a pen of three from RG Capstick & Son of Fell End Farm. A strong native cattle trade at Lancaster saw Hereford bullocks top at £1290 from R Speak of Billinge Hall with a pen of three Angus bullocks from A & E Clarkson of Cock Hall.
Heavy weight, close to finished black and white bullocks sold in excess of £1000 topping at £1100 from D & K Swarbrick of Bensons Farm. All bullocks forward in the market today averaged £1037. A pen of four impressive Charolais heifers from TN Pye and Partners of Langthwaite Farm topped the heifer trade at £1,220. It was good to have some young cattle on offer with Spring 2017 born bullocks from CA & J Alty & Son of Moss House Farm selling to £820.

OTM Cattle
There was a smaller offering of cast cows forward than expected following the New Year’s break.An entry of 96 met a flying trade, selling to an overall market average of 115p/kg. Black and whites selling to a market average of 113p/kg.
Calves and Stirks
There was a good number of calves forward following Christmas with over 60 on offer. British Blue bull calves sold to a top of £350 and £345 from AW & AM Park & Sons of Walker I’th Fields with Blue heifers from the same home selling to £310. Limousin bull calves sold to a top of £300 from C & AJ Woodhouse of Stubb Place. Black and white bull calves sold to a top of £100 from WN & D Smith & Sons of Cocker House Farm with weaned black and white calves selling to £200 from Ian Richardson of Goosnargh.
Just a few stirks in the market today saw Welsh Black heifers sell to £420 from Haven Lea Farms.
