Lancaster Livestock Auction: Store Cattle Friday 31st August

Store Cattle

The weekly sale of store cattle at Lancaster had a catalogued entry of over 200 once again, with a sharper trade for bigger stronger store cattle. Topping the trade today was Angus bullocks from T & M Halhead, Priest Hutton, selling to £1350. This was closely followed by a pen of Limousin Bullocks from A & E Clarkson, Thurnham. Plenty of pens of strong bullocks sold in the late £1200s. Heifers sold to a top of £1210 from Blackburn & Wood, Out Rawcliffe. Once again, beef bullocks averaged well over £1000. Black and White bullocks sold to a top of £950 from GE & AM Hewitt, Cockerham, with strong black and white bullocks selling in excess of £900.

OTM Cattle

There was a similar number of cast cows forward today with a plainer entry of cows on offer, but all types of cows were sharper on the week. Lancaster continues to have a good market for over 30 month steers and heifers, with these selling to a top of 224.5p/kg from RA Gibbons of Grange over Sands for a Simmental Bullock. Cast Cows twice topped at 154.5p/kg for Charolais cows, again from RA Gibbons with Limousin cows from A & P Hodgkinson, Stalmine also selling to 154.5p/kg. Good fit beef cows were selling excess of 140p/kg. Dairy cows sold to a top of 141.5p/kg for Swedish Reds from EW & RM Towers, Hornby, with Friesian with Norwegian Reds selling to 134.5p/kg. Plenty of good black and white cows were selling in the mid 120 pence a kilo. Cast Bulls sold to top of £1365 from Messrs HA Sawrey & Son, Great Urswick for an Angus Bull. Cows topped at £1251 from Limousins from A & P Hodgkinson. Heavy well-fleshed cows were easily selling excess of £1000.

Calves and Stirks

The monthly sale of Stirks at Lancaster had an entry of 70 forward for the sale. The trade was slightly sharper this month for stronger types with the grass now growing following on from the summer drought. Younger smaller ones looking buyable, with many not wanting to extend their winter. The trade topped at £510 from P Rossall of Claughton on Brock for a pen of Montbeliarde steers. British Blue steers sold to a top of £485 from MD Close and Son of Arkholme with heifers selling to £475 from JS Taylor of Lancaster. Bulls sold to a top of £460 from DJ Townley of Lancaster with British Blues.

The weekly sale of calves had a similar number on offer this week selling to a top of £325 for Angus Bulls from JK & BJ Birkett and Son of Morecambe.
