Spring Lambs

There was a larger entry of 1351 prime lambs forward for the sale with a buoyant trade throughout with all buyers keen to purchase with the upcoming Eid festival this weekend. There was an overall SQQ average of 193p/kg, with plenty of good conformation, well-finished lambs regularly selling in excess of the 200p/kg mark. Topping the trade today was Texel lambs from T & CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping selling to £110.50. Beltex Lambs sold to a top of £107 from R & DL Cornthwaite of Nateby. Suffolk lambs sold to a top of £101 from JS & S Atkinson, Scorton. Heavy weight lambs were often selling in the region of £100. Texel lambs sold to 243p/kg from T & ME Longton & Son, Quernmore. Beltex Lambs sold to 223p/kg from BR & S Carter, Pilling. There were more Mules on the market today selling to a top of £83.50 from JS & S Atkinson.

Cast Sheep

There was a bumper entry of cast ewes today, with 432 in market selling to a good trade throughout. The trade was topped by Texel Ewes from B & SE Carter, Ellel, which was closely followed by WJ & L Barker, Arkholme at £93, again for Texels. Charollais ewes sold to a top of £93 from Myerscough College, Suffolk ewes topped at £91 twice for ewes from BR & S Carter, Pilling and Tups from K & DE Woodhouse of Ellel. Best Mule ewes sold in excess of £80 topping at £85 from Stockdale Farms of Sedbergh. There was an overall market average of £67.54 for Mule Ewes, with Continentals and Suffolks averaging just short of £80. Swaledales sold to a top of £60 from Stockdale Farms, with fit Swale ewes selling £50 upwards.
