Lancaster Livestock Auction: Store Cattle Friday 10th August

Store Cattle

The Weekly sale of Store Cattle at Lancaster had an entry of 200 forward for the sale. The trade was sharper for all specifications of cattle, although long term black and whites are still hard to place. Topping the trade today was JA & LR Wilson, Millom selling Limousin Bullocks to £1320, this was closely followed by J Hesketh of Hutton to £1250. Native cattle are always good to sell which saw Angus bullocks sell to £1170 from T & E Burrow, Slyne. Heifers sold to a top of £1120 for Angus’ and Charolais.

Dairy bred bullocks saw Montbeliardes sell to £1090, twice, firstly from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe and DR Preston, Caton.

OTM Cattle

An entry of 68 Cast Cows forward this week sold to a sharper trade with an overall market average of 134.5p/kg which is a big improvement on the previous week and more could have easily been sold. Topping the trade was a Limousin from Ballacutchel Farms of Isle of Man, selling to 249.5p/kg or £1297. OTM Steers from the same home sold to 234p/kg or £1146. Best beef cows sold in excess of 150p/kg, selling to 154p/kg from A Dixon & Son, Selside for Stabiliser and A & P Hodgkinson, Stalmire with Limousin. Black and white cows saw best ones sell about 120p/kg mark topping at 124.5p/kg from MD Close, Arkholme.

Calves

There was an improved Calf trade this week with plenty of people ringside looking to purchase calves. The trade was topped by J & M Sanderson, Kirkham, selling their consignment of British Blue Bulls to £410, twice, £390 and £380. British Blue heifers from the same good home sold to a top of £300. Native calves remain slightly harder to place, especially heifers. Angus bull calves topped at £210 V & EJ Chadwick, Sowerby.

The Black and white trade was topped by Messrs Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale, selling to £162 and £130.

Store Lambs

The opening sale of Store Lambs at Lancaster had a buoyant trade with plenty of people ringside looking to purchase following on from the recent rain in the area and grass beginning to grow. It was Texel Lambs from T & G Dobson, Appleby, that topped selling to £58.

The next sale of Store Lambs will be on 24th August with entries for the catalogue closing on Monday 20th August.
