Lancaster Livestock Auction: Primestock & Sheep with Lambs Monday 30th April

Spring Lambs topped at £154, Prime Hoggs £164 and cast sheep £147

Spring Lambs

There was a smaller entry of spring lambs forward this week due to the weather not helping numbers come forward. There were ten active buyers ringside, ensuring a strong trade was enjoyed with more required to meet this strong demand. There was an overall market average of 316p/kg. Topping the trade today at 376p/kg or £154 was a pair of 41kg Suffolks from WN & D Smith of Cockerham purchased by Gregory Williams Butchers of Lancaster. This was closely followed by 46kg Suffolk lambs from the same home selling to £153.

Prime Hoggs

A larger entry of hoggs forward in the market met the strongest trade seen for a few weeks. There was a strong demand for heavy weight hoggs with all eagerly bid for. Topping the sale was MJ & K Ayrton of Thurnham with 66kg Texels selling to £164, closely followed by 65kg hoggs selling to £161 from T Nelson and Sons of Cockerham, who also sold 59kg hoggs to £159. More heavy weight hoggs are needed each week to meet demand from buyers. Cheviot hoggs sold to 281p/kg or £118 from J & H Davis of Cabus. Mules sold to a top of £116 from A & J Rhodes of Ellel closely followed by £115.50 from DC Miller of Claughton on Brock. Horned hoggs topped at £105 for 42kg Scotch Blackface hoggs from WM Pye of Stodday with Ashton.

Hoggs required each week with a busy ring of active buyers looking for all specifications.

Cast Sheep

A larger entry of over 100 cast sheep forward again this week. There was a sharper trade today with five buyers all keen to purchase ewes. Suffolk tups topped at £147 from T Nelson and Partners of Cockerham. The ewe trade saw Beltex ewes sell to £143 from J Smith of Daisy Bank with Texel ewes selling to £132 from CD & HL Mason of Caton. Plenty of heavy weight Continental ewes sold over £120. Mule ewes topped at £101 from T Nelson and Partners of Cockerham. Horned ewes sold to a top of £87 from DC Miller of Claughton on Brock.

Breeding Sheep

There were less ewes and lambs on offer today selling to a continued strong trade. The trade topped at £150 for broken mouthed continental ewes with Suffolk lambs three times from AG and GM Rowlinson of Killington.
