J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Fortnightly Sale of Calves, Stirks, Store and OTM Cattle, Thursday 11th January 2024

CALVES & WEANLINGS

139 calves forward saw bulls sell to a top price of £490 for a Charolais cross from Messrs Gibson and Berry, Endmoor. British Blues sold to £455 from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick and £400 from DR&C Galbraith, Grayrigg. Other stronger continental bull calves sold at £340 to £380, with mediums £270 to £330. Native sired bulls sold to £340 for an Aberdeen Angus cross from W&S Airey, Whittington who sold Hereford cross at £330. A large number of young native bulls were generally £160 to £210. Dairy bulls sold to £200 for Black and Whites from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe who sold others at £190 with stronger rears £140 to £160, mediums £95 to £120, with only the smallest and youngest £40 to £50.
Heifer calves sold to £410 for a British Blue cross from GA Sunter, Old Hutton who sold others at £400, as did Messrs Gibson and Berry, Endmoor. Month old British Blue cross heifer sold to £365 from A Pickthall, New Hutton with Charolais cross to £325 from Messrs Gibson and Berry, Endmoor with others generally £250 to £300.
61 reared and weaned calves saw steers sell to a top price of £670 for a ring full of Simmental cross from A&CM Carter, Witherslack. Other younger sorts sold to £550 for Aberdeen Angus cross from Messers Young, Lindale who sold Black and Whites at £350.

STIRKS

Bullocks sold to a top price of £810 for Aberdeen Angus cross from Bambers Farm, Cockerham who sold other at £790 and Limousin cross at £770.
Bulls sold to £750 for five month old Charolais cross from F&TE Park, Crook with Aberdeen Angus cross selling to £640 from Messrs Young, Lindale.
Heifers sold to £775 for a British Blue cross from Messrs Slinger and Eaton, Sedbergh with Aberdeen Angus cross to £690 from J&R Waller, Killington. Younger heifers sold to £620 for British Blue cross from Messrs Slinger and Eaton, Sedbergh with Limousin cross to £595 from Bambers Farm, Cockerham.

STORE CATTLE

The New Year Show and Sale of Store Cattle kicked off with a bang, with a sharp trade for all cattle from start to finish. The pre-sale Show, kindly sponsored by the Rural Law Practice saw the Championship rosette and the Janet Gorst Perpetual Trophy awarded to MA and JA Winn, Burneside with the Reserve honours going to the same good farming family.
Outside the Show, the sale topped at £2020 for a Limousin heifer from MA and JA Winn, Burneside who sold Blue heifers to £1900 with other blue heifers selling to £1820 from SJ & A Hargreaves, Middleton,
The bullock trade saw British Blues sell twice to £1800 from RT Gorst, Killington and MA & JA Winn, Burneside, with Limousins selling to £1780 from RG & L Holmes, Warton.
Stronger, well meated cattle, were regularly selling at £1650 to £1700. A run of 14 month old Blonde heifers from PJ & ES Rogerson, Great Asby saw the best sell to £1680, with Limousins selling to £1680 at the same age from Messrs Hodgson, Rydal.
Yearling bullocks saw a sharp trade throughout with a pair of Limousins selling to £1560 from D & A Nicholson, Ulverston, with yearling heifers selling to £1520 from M & L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale. A run of 8 – 10 month old Limousin bulls from M Allen, Yealand Conyers saw his best sell to £1140 and others to £1120.
220 bullocks averaged £1250, 165 heifers averaged £1220 and 15 bulls averaged £920.

OTM / CAST CATTLE

The opening sale of cull and OTM cattle saw an extremely strong trade for all classes and types, with an overall market average of 169.5p/kg achieved. Heavy well fleshed beef cows sold to 234.5p/kg for a young Aberdeen Angus cross from M Allen, Carnforth with Stabilisers to 221.5p/kg from A Dixon & Son, Selside and British Blue cross to 214.5p/kg from JA&J Harper, Sedbergh. Other heavier well fleshed beef cows were 190p/kg to 205p/kg. Todays sale peaking at £1753 for an eight year old Stabiliser from A Dixon, Selside. Dairy cows sold to a top of 197.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from KE Robinson, Farleton with British Friesians selling to 179.5p/kg from JW Hargreaves, Brought in Furness. Other heavy well flesh dairy cows 160p/kg to 175p/kg, medium parlour types 145p/kg to 158p/kg with only the very lightest and leanest less. Top grossing dairy cow was a Holstein Friesian from Jenkin Cragg Farms, Kendal achieving £1588.
OTM beef heifers sold to 234.5p/kg and £1270 for Stabilisers from A Dixon & Son, Selside with dairy heifers to 214.5p/kg and £1415 from BW&G Robinson, Ingleton.
Cull stock bulls sold to 154.5p/kg for a Fleckvieh from SJ&J Hodgson & Son, Colton and £1543 for a Simmental from PG&PD Airey, Cartmel.
