Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Auction Mart Sale of Calves, Dairy Cattle, OTM and Store Cattle, Friday 12th January 2024.

The popular Friday sale at NWA Lancaster saw over 600 cattle forward, selling across all rings with vendors leaving well suited with prices achieved and many reporting ahead of other local centres.

CALVES & WEANLINGS

Another rise in number saw 127 forward, with new customer once again in attendance both buying and selling. Bull calves sold to £490 for a Limousin from I Atkinson & Son, Warton. A large number of rearing bull calves forward sold to £390 and £380 for five week old Charolais cross bulls from RT Halhead, Cockerham, with others regularly £350 to £375. British Blue cross bulls sold to £335 from Mason Birkland Barrow, Carnforth with other at £335 from I Atkinson, Warton. Sweeter young rearers sold to £300 from Throstle Nest Farms, Pilling and Barber Farms, Claughton on Brock. Other mediums bulls were regularly £250 to £300. Native sired bulls sold to £405 for an Aberdeen Angus cross from J&G Thornley, Kirkham who sold others at £370. Other stronger Aberdeen Angus £355 from CR&A Baxter & Son, Morecambe and £350 Lawsons Farm, Cockerham. Younger native bulls were generally £220 to £270.
Dairy bulls saw a top price of £250 for an eight week old Fleckvieh from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green who sold British Friesians at £220, with Holstein Friesian to £210 from WG Farms, Cockerham. Month old Montbeliardes sold to £200 from GJ&G Billington, Garstang. Better end rearing dairy bulls were £140 to £160, medium £100 plus with only the smallest and youngest less.
Heifer calves sold to £475 for a British Blue cross from WG Farms, Cockerham with Charolais cross achieving £470 from J&G Thornley, Kirkham. Other stronger Continental heifers were £320 to £400 with the best younger rearers £295 for British Blue cross from JP&C Robson, Garstang with others at £290 from Barber Farms, Garstang. Native sired heifers sold to £320 for Aberdeen Angus cross from AW&AM Park, Ellel who sold others at £300. Younger month sold native heifers were generally £170 to £200.
Several weaned calves forward saw British Blue cross heifer sell to £690 from WG Farms, Cockerham with British Blue cross steers from AJ Metcalfe, Out Rawcliffe selling to £560.

DAIRY

A small show of dairy this week saw new calved Holstein heifers sell to £1800 from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe with cross breds to £1550 from R&K Jenkinson, Pilling.

STORE CATTLE

243 store cattle forward sold to another exceptional trade, with all steers averaged £1442 and heifers £1285. The consignment of Charolais cross steer from RH Dodgson, Burton in Lonsdale sold to a top price of £2100 with others at £2060 and £1980. Other strong well bred steers sold to £2040 from PM&ST Entwistle, Abbeystead who also sold British Blue cross at £2020. Other strongest steers sold to £1960 for Limousin cross from H Chapman, Middleton with British Blue to £1940 from M Shepherd & Son, Pilling. Native steers sold to £1900 for a ring full of Aberdeen Angus cross from JT&GV Dobson, Clitheroe with others at £1880 from K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel. Dairy bed steers sold to £1620 for a Montbeliarde from WG&RG Riley, Chorley. Others achieved £1540 from J&JM Walmsley, Pilling who sold Norwegian Red and Whites at £1400, with British Friesian also selling to £1400 from EE Thornton & Sons, Heaton. Younger steers sold to £1280 for a ring full of fifteen month old Beef Shorthorns from JA&ME Mawson, Orton with British Blue cross also achieving £1280 from V&S Fitzell, Much Hoole.
Heifers sold to £1780 for a Hereford cross from JT&GV Dobson, Clitheroe who also sold Aberdeen Angus at £1680. Continental cross heifer sold to £1680 for a Limousin from D&G Smith, Ashton, with Simmentals to £1570 from EW&A Bradshaw, Stalmine and British Blue cross to £1500 from JB Moore, Allithwaite. Other stronger heifers were generally £1380 to £1500.
Younger heifers saw sixteen month old British Blue cross sell to £1240 from JA&ME Mawson, Orton with others £1240 from TH Wensley, Kirkham. Limousin cross sold to £1180 from H&A Stephenson, Tunstall.

OTM / CAST CATTLE

An increase in numbers forward saw 160 head sell to an active ring side of ten buyers, who can easily cater for all forward. 150 OTM cattle can easily be sold at Lancaster every week. Beef cows sold to 194.5p/kg for a Limousin from JM&JJ Dawson, Littledale with others at 189.5p/kg from T Ayrton & Sons, Over Wyersdale and M&L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale. Other better end beef cows were generally 170p/kg to 180p/kg, with a keen interest in those suitable for feeding. Top grossing today being a Limousin from JM&JJ Dawson, Littledale achieving £1400. Heavy well fleshed dairy cows were easily sold, peaking at 214.5p/kg for a young Holstein Friesian from WG Farms, Cockerham with other heavies to 184.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe and 181.5p/kg for a Montbeliarde from A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel. Other well fleshed dairy cows were regularly 165p/kg to 180p/kg, with medium 145p/kg to 160p/kg and only the lightest and leanest less (generally 120p/kg to 140p/kg). Top grossing dairy cow was a Holstein Friesian from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe achieving £1476 who also sold others at £1471 and £1457 from Lawsons Dairy, Cockerham. Heavy well fleshed dairy cows were regularly £1300 to £1400. Well fleshed mediums were £1100 to £1200.
OTM heifers sold to a top price of 239.5p/kg for a Swedish Red and White cross from J&H Bland & Son, Levens and a Holstein Friesian from G&ME Woodhouse & Son, Ellel. Others were regularly 210p/kg to 220p/kg, with lightest weights 180p/kg to 200p/kg. Top grossing achieving £1573 from J&H Bland & Sons, Levens.
Just a single cull bull forward today achieving 189.5p/kg and £1705 for a Limousin from JT&GV Dobson, Clitheroe.
