J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Fortnightly Sale of Calves, Stirks, Store and OTM Cattle, Thursday 26th October 2023

CALVES & WEANLINGS

131 rearing calves were forward for the Semex and Norbreck Genetics prize show, which was kindly judged by Mr J Young, Lindal who awarded the prizes as followed:

Class 1: Beef Bred Bull Calf

Class 3: Dairy Bred Bull Calf
1st JW&TE Sharp Ltd, Flodder Hall

Champion: A Pickthall, Barrons Farm
Reserve Champion: DR&C Galbraith, Sunny Bank

All calves sold a top of £500 for a British Blue bull from A Pickthall, New Hutton with others at £490 from J&S Breakwell, Kirkby in Furness, £480 HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick and £470 DW&E Cottom, New Hutton (all these bring under 56 days of age). Other stronger beef bulls were generally £400 to £450, with mediums £320 to £380 and the youngest £180 to £250. Diary bulls sold to £270 for Black and Whites from AK&BM Robinson & Son, Arkhholme with the best young rearers to £100 from JW&TE Sharpe, Lyth and £95 from FB Dunning & Son, Orton.
Heifer calves sold to £540 for British Blue x from AK&BM Robinson & Son, Arkholme who sold others at £430 and £510 was achieved by W Stamper, Chipping. The best young rearing heifers sold to £390 for Brtish Blue x form DR&C Galbraith, Grayrigg with Limousin x to £385 from Langley Park Farms, Millom with others generally £310 to £360, mediums £240 to £300 and the youngest £120 to £180.
52 weaned calves and stirks today saw British Blue x bulls from TW Handley, Sedbergh sell to £720, with others at £670 from JM Simpson, Under Barrow. Younger bull stirks sold to £480 for Hereford x from C Preston, Millom.
Heifer stirks sold to £720 for Charolais x from R&BJ Cleasby, Broughton in Furness with British Blue x selling to £700 from WB Winder & Co, Broughton in Furness. Younger heifers sold to £640 for British Blue x from Messrs Young, Lindal with Hereford x to £530 form C Preston, Millom.
Steers sold to £890 for British Blue x from R&BJ Cleasby, Broughton in Furness with others at £730 from J&R Waller, Killington and Aberdeen Angus x selling to £700 from RM Clarke, Grange Over sands.
Dairy bred steers sold to £575 for a Montbeliarde form W Stamper, Chipping.

OTM/CULL CATTLE

The largest entry for some time with 103 forward and an overall averaged of 138p/kg achieved, for a sale comprising of predominately leaner dairy cows and hard worked beef cows. The best beef cows sold to 199.5p/kg for Limousin cows from HE&M Henderson, Dent with other heavy weight beef cows 155p/kg to 180p/kg. Leaner medium beef cows were 140p/kg to 155p/kg. Top grossing beef cow was a Limousin from HE&M Henderson, Dent achieving £1578 with a Blonde from J&J Whaley, Hawes achieving £1442. Dairy cows sold to 154.5p/kg for a heavy well fleshed Holstein Friesian from S&M Cooper, Leece with others at 149.5p/kg from Jenkin Cragg Farms, Kendal and TMW&H Hodgson, Nibthwaite. Medium parlour type dairy cows were generally 128p/kg to 140p/kg, with leaners sorts 100p/kg to 125p/kg and the smaller and leanest at realisation. Top grossing dairy cow today was a Holstein Friesian form Jenkin Crag Farms, Kendal achieving £1261.
OTM heifers sold to 199.5p/kg and £1101 for a Saler from M&M Carr, Clawthorpe with dairy heifers selling to 139.5p/kg from Jenkin Cragg Farms, Kendal.
OTM steers sold to 224.5p/kg and £1336 for British Blue x from JW Robinson & Son, Farlton.
Seven cull stock bulls were forward today, selling to 189.5p/kg for a Hereford from TLB&J Knowles, Selside with Charolais selling to 179.5p/kg form TM&D Dobson, Crosthwaite. Other beef bulls were 140p/kg to 165p/kg. Top grossing bull was a Charolais from TM&D Dobson, Crosthwaite totalling £2224.

BEEF BREEDING CATTLE

The October sale of beef breeding cattle included the dispersal of Saler x cows with Saler calves at foot on behalf of M&M Carr, Clawthopre which saw a top price of £1680 achieved for a cow with bull calf at foot, with others at £1520 and £1500, with older cows and calves £1250 to £1400.
In calf heifers sold to £1480 from M&M Carr, Clawthorpe with MJ Waller, Lupton selling Charolais x in calf heifers due to the British Blue bull to £1400.

STORE CATTLE

175 store cattle were forward with buyers continuing to seek for additional and replacement stock, with well bred and fed cattle attracting the keenest interest with cattle showing the effects of the recent weather change perhaps a slightly more cautious trade. Steers sold to a top price of £1440 for a pair of Aberdeen Angus x from S&M Carter, Witherslack with Limousin x selling to £1400 from CI Briggs, Ambleside, Herefords £1300 from E Parker, Mewith and Charolais x £1290 from AG&ME Clark, Cartmel Fell. Stronger steers were generally £1100 to £1250, with younger steers £900 to £1050.
Store heifers sold to a top of £1300 for a Limousin x from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton with others at £1240 from H Callon, Bowland Bridge and £1210 from CI Briggs, Ambleside. Other stronger heifers were £1000 to £1200, with yearlings generally £800 to £950, depending on breed and quality.
Young bulls sold to £810 for a Beef Shorthorn x from AW Irvine, Ambleside.

The next sale of cattle is on Thursday 9th November which includes the second prize show and sale on suckler calves.
