Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Auction Mart Sale of Calves, Stirks, OTM and Store Cattle, Friday 27th October 2023.

North West Auctions held its popular weekly sale for all classes of cattle at NWA Lancaster, which saw 453 forward and sold in just over two hours. This popular Friday sale continues to attract new and returning customers, keen to take advantage of the quality and quantity of stock for which this renowned sale is well known for.

OTM / CAST CATTLE

The sale commenced with 123 cull cows, being the largest sale this week in the county, with an overall market averaged 144.8p/kg. Today’s sale peaked at 181.5p/kg for a well fleshed heavyweight Holstein Friesian from R&E Ladds, Scalthwaiterigg. Other heavy well fleshed dairy cows were regularly 145p/kg to 160 p/kg, with mediums 130p/kg to 140p/kg and lighter weight and leaner cows less. Top grossing dairy cow was another from R&E Ladds, Scalthwaiterigg achieving £1250. Beef cows sold to 179.5p/kg for a Limousin from the Isle of Man. Other heavy weight well bred cows 155p/kg to 170p/kg, with first cross beef cows 135p/kg to 150p/kg, depending on quality and type. Top grossing beef cows was a heavy weight Charolais x from D Eames, Abbeystead achieving £1358.
OTM heifers sold to 269.5p/kg for a Limousin cross from M&RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe with other beef heifers 220p/kg to 240p/kg, topping at £1609 for an Aberdeen Angus cross from R Collinge & Son, Kirkham. Dairy heifers sold to 239.5p/kg and £1233 for a Fleckvieh from JK&B Birkett & Son, Morecambe.
Steers sold to 289.5p/kg and £1794 for a Limousin cross from M&RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe.
Cull bulls sold to 159.5p/kg and £1682 for an Aberdeen Angus from SR&PA Thompson, Sedbergh.

CALVES & WEANLINGS

68 rearing calves saw eight week old British Blue cross bulls from JP&C Robson, Garstang sell to £515 with others at £495. Six week old British Blue cross bulls from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping sold to £430, with others at £410 with Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale achieving £405. Native sired bull calves sold to £325 for an Aberdeen Angus cross from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping. Younger rearing bulls sold to £260 for Aberdeen Angus cross from AD&R Milner, Claughton on Brock with three week old Aberdeen Angus cross bulls selling to £240 from GJ&G Billington, Catterall.
Dairy bulls sold to £190 from AK&BM Robinson, Arkholme with others at £180 and £175 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale, best medium rearers were £120 to £140.
25 Weaned calves saw four month old British Blue cross bulls from SH&M Batty, Quernmore sell at £615 and £600 with twelve week old Aberdeen Angus cross bulls from W&G Cornthwaite & Son, Claughton on Brock selling at £445.
Heifer calves sold to £355 for a six week old British Blue cross from JP&C Robson, Garstang with others at £340 from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping. Other younger beef heifer calves were generally £220 to £260.
Weaned heifers sold to £600 for a Charolais cross from FP&G Slater, Witherslack who sold Limousin cross £590 and Simmental cross at £560.
Simmental cross steers from FP&G Slater sold at £570, with Aberdeen Angus cross selling to £540 from SH&M Batty & Son, Quernmore.

STORE CATTLE

Steers sold to a top price of £1880 for a Charolais cross from DJ Townley, Lancaster with an Aberdeen Angus cross from TC Whiteside & Son, Pilling achieving £1780. Other strong steers were regularly £1500 to £1700. Dairy bred steers sold to £1470 for Montbeliarde and Holstein Friesian from T&E Garlick & Son, Freckleton. A consignment of twelve to fifteen month old steers from the Isle of Man sold to £1260 for a Charolais cross with other Simmental and Charolais cross steers at £1140.
Heifers sold to £1650 for a ring full of Limousin and Charolais cross from R&EA Gardner, Briggsteer with others at £1560 from R&DM Rossall & Son, Pilling. This home also sold British Blue cross at £1500, with this price also achieved for Limousin cross from DJ Townley, Lancaster. A ring full of Aberdeen Angus cross heifer from R&E Ladds, Scalthwaiterigg sold at £1460. Stronger heifers were regularly £1300 to £1450, with fifteen month old Charolais cross from the Isle of Man sold to £1140 with Aberdeen Angus at £980.

STIRKS 

The monthly sale of stirks saw Aberdeen Angus cross steers sell to £960 from G Metcalfe & Son, Gressingham with others at £940 from J&R Waller, Killington. British Blue cross sold to £810 from R Fare, Kirkham. Younger steers were generally £740 to £800. Six month olds sold to £700 for Aberdeen Angus from JR&A Thornton, Winmarleigh who sold Hereford cross at £660.
Heifer stirks sold to £700 for a British Blue cross heifers from J&R Waller, Killington with an entry of predominately five to seven month old heifers forward selling at £600 to £750.
