J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Weekly Sale of Sheep with Lambs at Foot, Spring Lambs, Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep, Tuesday 2nd May 2023.

SHEEP WITH LAMBS AT FOOT

The largest entry of sheep with lambs at foot to date, saw 859 forward with an overall market averaged of £73.24 achieved, with an ever-increasing ring side of buyers all keen to secure additional stock and take advantage of the fast-growing grass.
Younger sheep are now coming forward in greater numbers this week, selling to £305 for a pen full of Texel x shearlings with twin Texel x lambs from G&KM Atkinson, Appleby who also sold Mule shearlings with twin Texel lambs at £270. Other Texel x shearlings with twin lambs sold to £300 on two occasions from J&M Wilson, Selside. Texel x shearlings with young Texel x lambs from RT Colbear, Appleby sold to £260. Two and three crop ewes continue to attract interest, selling to £250 for a Texel x with twin lambs from Messrs Buckle, Kirkby Stephen with others at £245 from JM&NJ Strickland, Whinfell and CR Alderson & Son, Kirkby Stephen. Older ewes sold to £240 on two occasions for Mules with Twin Texel lambs from TW Gorst, Crook with others at £230 from M Grunhill, Ayside, who also a sold Suffolk x at £225. An eye catching ring full of Mule hoggs with Suffolk lambs from RC Wharton & Son, Appleby sold at £200. Hill ewes are now coming forward, selling to £195 for Cheviot ewes with Beltex lambs from Messrs Buckle, Kirkby Stephen with others at £170 from R Heath, Bootle. Aged Lonk ewes with single Texel lambs sold to £125 from AJ Ellis, New Hutton with other Horned ewes selling to at £115 from JR Metcalfe, Ravenstonedale.

SPRING LAMBS

Numbers and demand are increasing week on week, with an overall market average of 345p/kg for all sold. Well bred lambs continue to sell to a premium, a tremendous Suffolk x Texel from M&RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe raced away to a final bid of £200. This home also sold others at £192 and £186. A consignment of heavy weight lambs from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe sold to £192 with Suffolk x lambs form JBL&I Ellis, New Hutton selling at £182. Three quarter Texel x lambs from J&O Galbraith & Son, Endmoor sold to £180. Dorset x lambs from FE&CM Robinson, Crooklands sold to £160. Well-bred lambs regularly sold at 280p/kg to 410p/kg. Peaking at 417p/kg for Texel x from M&RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe followed by others at 414p/kg from JBL&I Ellis, New Hutton. First x lambs were 314p/kg to 360p/kg depending on breed and weight.

PRIME HOGGS

A seasonal entry of prime hoggs saw an overall market average of 282p/kg for hoggs ranging from 25kg to 86kg. Well bred, well finished hoggs attract the keenest interest selling to 385p/kg from KA Purtill, Wigan who sold others at 370p/kg. A tremendous run of fed hoggs from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston saw Cheviots sell to 316p/kg, with others at 315p/kg and Scotch Black Face at 311p/kg. Well finished hoggs were nicely selling at 290p/kg to 310p/kg, depending on breed and weight.
Hoggs sold to a top price of £185 for a pen of Beltex x from KA Purtill, Wigan. Closely followed by Texel x achieving £176 from AG Butler, Hambleton with others achieving £173 from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet and CA&M Jackson, Caton. Other heavy weight hoggs regularly achieved £150 to £165.
Hill bred hoggs sold to £143 for Cheviots from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston with others at £141 from JE Atkinson, Ulverston, Scotch Blackface £141 from B&JI Williams, Kirkby Stephen, Herdwicks £125 from Ingleborough Farming, Ingleton and Rough Fells £120 from Stockdale Farms Ltd.

CAST SHEEP

An increased entry of ewes, as farmers now look to clear the sheds of unwanted passengers. Heavy weight and pure bred ewes were in short supply with those forward selling to £174 for a Texel from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Others sold to £170 from JE Wightman, Luton and £168 from MA&JA Winn, Burneside. Heavy weight Mules sold to £168 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe with others at £130 from the IOM. Hill ewes sold to £138 for a Cheviot from CI Briggs, Ambleside with others at £126 from JR Handley, Whinfell. Swaledales sold to £102 from JW Bentham & Son, Dent with others at £98 from RI Dixon, Low Newton. Scotch Black face ewes sold to £85 from the IOM.
Cull rams sold to £200 for a Teeswater from DE & J Waine, Longsleddale with a large number of medium Continental rams selling to £174 from M&YS Barker, Halton with others at £168 from T Ellis, New Hutton.
