Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Auction Marts Sale of Calves, Store & OTM Cattle, Friday 3rd February 2023

What a difference a week makes with a lot more interest in calves at Lancaster, the trade a lot sharper and more buyers ringside looking for all types of calves. A consignment of native calves from RE&P Miller, Barnacre led the way with Aberdeen Angus bulls to £395 and £375. This was matched by the consignment from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping selling British Blue bulls to £395 and £365 with Aberdeen Angus bull calves from the same home to £380. Rounding off a good day for the Kelsall’s, they topped the heifer section selling British Blue heifers to £280. British Blue bulls sold to £360 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with other Blue bulls to £310 from Richard and Claire Barbour, Claughton on Brock. Followed by £200 and £380 for Aberdeen Angus bull calves from W&G Cornthwaite, Claughton on Brock. A pair of Charolais heifers from TM Townley, Over Wyresdale sold to £270 and £265 with plenty of beef calves today selling in the mid two hundreds. Native heifers were met with more demand ring side with Aberdeen Angus to £255 and £240 from T&CM Kelsall & Sons. Black and White bull calves twice sold to £150 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with others twice to £100 from T&CM Kelsall & Sons.

Store Cattle

The overall market average for the store cattle at Lancaster today was £1313, yes you read that right! More cattle are needed to fulfil buyers requirements with the demand currently high and vendors are urged to sell while the going is good. The £2000 barrier was smashed twice with Limousin bullocks to £2060 and £2020 from PM&ST Entwistle, Abbeystead with others from the same good home to £1860. At £1940 was a Limousin bullock from Mrs H Chapman & Son, Middleton. A pen of four Aberdeen Angus bullocks peaked at £1900 from TC Whiteside & Son, Pilling. Charolais bullocks topped at £1800 for a pen of three from WA Hodgson, Whinfell. British Blue bullocks sold to £1610 from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse with an Aberdeen Angus and a Charolais bullock to £1600 from MJ Waller, Lupton. Dairy bullocks sold to £1570 for Montbeliardes and £1540 for Fleckviehs from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse.
The heifer trade peaked at £1610 from M Shepherd & Sons, Pilling with a pen of four British Blue heifers to £1570 from R&DM Rossall & Sons, Pilling. Native heifers peaked at £1450 for a pen of three Herefords from D Fox & Co, Bay Horse.

OTM Cattle

The cast cow trade continues to go from strength to strength with vendors strongly advised to take advantage of the trade and sell any passengers. There was an overall market average of 182p/kg or an extremely impressive averaged of £1225 per head with Lancaster continuing to be one of the leading markets to sell OTM cattle.
An impressing three year old Limousin heifer led the way selling to 274.5p/kg or a top price per head of £1899.54 from MA &JA Winn, Burneside. This was followed by Fleckvieh feeding heifers to 244.5p/kg or £1594 from R Packham & Sons, Docker with young Blonde bulls to 244.5p/kg or £1491. Stock bulls peaked at £1791 for an Aberdeen Angus from JJ&J Woof & Sons, Dent. Beef cows twice sold to 239.5p/kg firstly for a British Blue from GR&A Foy, Conder Green grossing £1501 with a Limousin cow to 239.5p/kg or £1434 from JM&JJ Dawson, Littledale. Beef cows sold to a top of £1785 for a Charolais from HR&KA Hodgson, Barbon with British Blue peaking at £1639 from AT Rogerson, Chipping. The best dairy cows sold to 211.5p/kg with plenty of well fleshed cows selling regularly over the 200p/kg mark. Dairy cows peaked at £1803 from GR&B Lewis, Middleton with others to £1696 from JS&KM Wilson & Son, Kendal whom sold others to £1590, £1578 and £1543. This was followed by other leading prices of £1558 from RT Halhead, Cockerham, £1535 and £1532 from MD Close & Son, Arkholme, £1507 from TL Baldwin & son, Forton and £1503 from WG Farms, Cockerham.
