Prime Lambs
A bumper entry of 2066 prime lambs were forward today which saw all weights and specifications of lambs bid for eagerly by a busy ring of buyers. Once again heavy weight lambs continue to be eagerly bid for with Texels peaking at £137 from F&CE Bentley & Son, Shap and others to £136.50 from RA Gibons, Flookburgh. Followed by £135 twice for Texels from TMW&H Hodgson, Ulverston and £135 from MW&M Hodgson, Cartmel Fell. Plenty more heavy weight Texel lambs sold in the one hundred and thirty pound region. Heavy weight Charollais lambs peaked at £136 from RR&J Knowles, Docker. Heavy weight Mules peaked £120 from Low Moor Howe, Windermere with other Mules to £114 from D Wightman & A Mason, Burton. Handy weighted lambs were a sharper trade with better bred handy weighted lambs regularly selling in excess of the 250p/kg mark and the best types selling in the region of 300p/kg.
The annual young handlers show of prime lambs at J36 was once again very well supported and it was great to see so many keen, enthusiastic young farmers in the market expertly showing their lambs. A big thank you goes to our pre sale judge Mr George Robinson who we thank for his time, expertise and under taking this big task. A special mention goes to our sponsors, The Rural Law Practise, Kendal College Agricultural department, Milking Parlour Ice Creams - Kirkby Lonsdale, Greenlands Farm Village and Roast Mutton Butchers Shop. The John Geldard Challenge Cup for the champion young handler was awarded to Thomas Wilson, Selside with his 62kg Texel lamb going on to sell for £200 purchased by John Geldard on behalf of Plumgarths Farm Shop. The Cornthwaite Group Shield for the Champion prime lamb was awarded to Johnathan Winn, Burneside with his 48kg lamb going on to sell for £170 purchased by Jimmy Blenkhorn on behalf of Lancashire Halal Direct. A big thank you to all our buyers for their support and eager bidding, as well as our young farmers for their participation.
