The Ambleside fair show and sale of 4500 store lambs was met with new faces as well as our loyal ring side of buyers which ensured all store lambs sold to a shaper trade than in previous sales. We would like to take this time to thank our pre sale judge Mr J Longworth, Kentmere. John awarded his prizes as follows:
Class 1- 20 Continental/ Suffolk Sired Store Lambs
1st BJ Bowness selling for £94
2nd J&R Bell selling for £89.50
3rd Messrs Hodgson selling for £85
Class 2- 20 Mule Store Lambs
1st Messrs Hodgson selling for £94
2nd L Gleadow selling for £88
3rd RI Dixon selling for £85.50
Leading the way today was the consignment of Beltex lambs from CM Jennings, Selside selling to £124 with others from the same good home selling to £98. A full pen of Texel lambs from JC Dunning, Orton sold to £96. Many of the best Beltex and Texel lambs getting into the nineties. Trade remained buoyant throughout the sale for short keep lambs with these types selling in to the mid to late eighties. Mule lambs would see the biggest lift from previous sales with a top of £94 from Messrs Hodgson, High Borrans with other Mule lambs selling to £93.50 from AW&AM Clarke, Windermere. Plenty of pens of strong Mule wether lambs easily sold into the mid-eighties with medium type lambs selling to the high seventies. A big show of hill bred lambs were forward which saw these well bid for. Cheviots sold to a top of £73 from DH Holme, Kirkby Stephen with a full pen of 48 from MB Meredith, Coniston selling to £71.50. Rough Fells sold to £71 from DH Holme, Kirkby Stephen with others selling to £70 from L Potter, Orton. An increased number of Swaledale wethers on the market today with the best regularly over the fifty-pound mark topping at £54.50 from RA Walton, Torver.
